I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with this or know if the CDI ignition boxes from a 1986 would work with a 1984?

    All help is appreciated!

    Thanks - Jacob

I too would appreciate if someone could share their thoughts on this question. I have posted it in another thread a few times with no luck. Anyone?

Ignition coils of '85 and '86 have the same part number and I believe there is no reason for the advance to be different.
In every manual I have seen there are two values for advance: idle advance of 15 deg and full advance of 37 deg above 3300rpm. You can plug the units, check the tach needle kicks when "run" is turned on and then turn engine on and check the timing marks are correctly placed at above values.
I would bet my money there wouldn't be any problem at all, but I cannot say it for sure.

    Hey thanks for the input!

But yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. Well I ordered some because I found ones from an 1986 for cheap. I let you guys know when they come in.

I have checked a few of the fiche sites and the 1984 and 1985 units are the same part number, but the 1986 is different. I wonder if there was a change related to the few other changes to the 1986 (carb, intake valves, cams)?

From what I have read, the CDI ignition modules have a lower rev limit on the '86 compared to the '84/'85. I believe the lower rev limit was based on an attempt to increase the longevity of the engine.

As noted in other posts – it is easy (and fun) to run all the way up to red line on the VF500F engine but the cams and rockers wear prematurely - when hanging out above 11k.

Since I am generally going to keep the thing under 10k rpm (risk management!) then I should not have any problems using these modules. They were on the bike before I tore it apart and they did work, so I think things should be fine then. Thanks for the info.
