So I hear a clicking noise by the rear wheel of my '86 vfr, mechanic says, probably the chain.
I take the chain off, turn wheel. Still clicking. Pull wheel off.
3 BALL BEARINGS...vaporized on the sprocket side. They were dryer than a popcorn fart.
    Otherside...fine.
Do I replace both sides anyway?
    LOL...chain & sprockets are fine.

you dig in that far you do it all b/c you will need to change all eventually. you want to ride the bike, not have it laid up in a shop or garage on 2 separate ocassions.
