    gas leaks

This is on a '95.....So far I've replaced the fuel pump(gas weeping out between body & base) & fuel petcock/shutoff valve on bottom of gas tank(weeping between the body & lever). Both of these leaks would (eventually)turn into a few drops of liquid & became pretty evident after the bike was warmed up. Smell was the first clue, but it took a bit of looking around to isolate the problem(s), as the dripping was slow enough that the evidence was almost always obscured by evaporation. Turned out that "staining" around the problem areas was the main giveaway, tended to collect road dust, etc. Just more possibilities, stuff to look out for.

Mabye take a good look at the rubber hose coming out of the petcock. I just found out that mine was cracked (not noticeable until wiggled) and would drip at a very slow rate, enough that the fuel evaporated before I could find any collecting, but would smell. I second the looking for "stains" or darker areas. Congrats on the purchase!

sounds like an overfill/expansion in the heat/drain tube thing... wouldnt worry.

the petcock is under the front of the seat (you will have to remove) on the left side of the gas tank in the back. doubt you will need it

Same "problem" here. I let my 1995 VFR rest outside for a few ours after a ride , until the engine has cooled down completely, and than put it in my garage. No gas smell then.
