Hey guys. I'm working on my '86 VF500F and am starting my planning for the fairings. First thing's first though, and that is to get the mounts sorted out.

The rear cowl, that's easy - 2 screws in the back (one mount broken), and two in the front (collars on order).
Sidecovers, no problem - push on (one peg broken).
Front cowl - two rubber grommets and a couple of screws at the bottom (ordered)

Now, where I need help is with the Airtech lower cowl. On my bike the left and right mounting points are different. 3 of the 4 use a slotted bracket and I'm not sure what kind of hardware they are supposed to use. You guys seen this in the past, or how are your Airtechs mounted?

    Here's a few pics...

    Thanks!

    Greg

I don't have the Airtech fairing, but instead have the Lockhart fairing on my 500. The mounting might be similar. It does use the 4 mounting points originally used by the lower cowl. It does use the slotted brackets as you've mentioned along with aluminum spacers, nuts and bolts. So from the fairing, you might have a bolt that slides through a 1" spacer (on the inside of the fairing) which then connects to one end of the bracket. The other end of the bracket then then bolts to the mounting point. To get mine to fit properly, I did have to bend the tabs at the mounting point on the frame. I hope this helps.

It helps. Thanks. Since I didn't get any hardware when I bought the bike I think I'm going to have to figure out what I've got in the parts bin that will work. It might be I have a Lockhart instead of an Airtech too. Here's a pic of what I've got. Dunno the difference between the two fairings so I'm depending on you guys to help me figure this out.

    Thanks,

Yes, you've got the Lockhart fairing. That's the same one I've got on my 500. It makes the bike look very similar to the 1000R. Once you get it installed, I'm sure you'll love the looks of it. It will definitely make the bike stand out.

Sweet, a Lockhart! Yeah, this project's comiing along. I'm awaiting some OEM parts to first fit up the stock fairings so I can get the mounting for the lower sorted.

Looking at my own pics shows the areas that have the most glaring flaws....like the rusty exhaust. I've got a small blasting cabinet in the garage that I'm going to use to clean that mess up soon. A nice satin high temp black will look good and tend to hide the collector from view.
