sorry about asking this, but my poor searching skills turned up nothing.

the earlier 6th gens have a black-colored section between the headlights. is that a plastic piece? or is that vinyl or paint? i like the look and i was hoping to find out more about it. thanks for any help.

Twin, I believe he is referencing the front point of the front cowl, below the windscreen where the section is black between the headlight. It is part of the front cowl (part 4 on the link Twin provided). It is plastic and part of the front cowl. I can't confirm 100% but I believe it to be unpainted and polished plastic. It could very well be a different material than the ABS plastic that the front cowl is part of and just not available as a separate part. I've never paid too much attention to it other than wanting to cover it up with a bug buster which would probably be your easiest solution for turning that section black. I had never noticed the difference till you mentioned it.

Part #4 is the upper cowl.

    Here's why I'm thinking it's #5:

On second thought it's not #5 because that's the part I clean underneath the windscreen when she gets a bath.

It does appear to be part of the upper cowl assembly(#4), pictures do actually help don't they?!

Lol Twin. Its all good. The part you specified is the meter panel for the dash. It is just a plastic bezel that covers the tach and two information displays, and extends down joining the two sides of the upper cowl thus adding some strength to it and giving it all a clean look.

Mine is black like the first one that you painted and doesn't appear to be painted at all, just polished black plastic. Short of painting it, the bug buster is the only product that I've seen for the VFR that covers this area.. plus it is available in a multitude of colors.
