Flushed the radiator and put in a 60/40 ratio of DIH20 to coolant. After a 30 minute ride today(60 degree weather) the engine temp at idle goes up to 250 degrees and was still climbing when I shut her down. Doesn't the cooling fan come on around 212 degrees and shouldn't I be able to hear it with my helmet off? Does the fan only run while the engine is running or does it run when the key is turned on but the engine off? I read about air bubbles causing a problem. How do I get rid of any air bubbles? Thanks...DJS
do you think your thermostat is busted? It seems like that is getting pretty hot. I was thinking the hottest I have seen mine get is around 215 but I'm not 100% sure. It's kind of a pain in the butt to get to the thermostat on our generation but it might fix your prob...
Well generally youll want to find the highest point of the cooling system - this should be your radiator cap. Let it run and warm up enough to open the thermostat with the cap off. Once the thermostat opens the coolant will drop and you can start to add more in slowly. You might check it now once cold and it may have dropped already in which case you can just add more too it and retry. Brian
I have had this same problem. in my case the thermostat switch that turns on the fan failed. here is the test for it. 1. find switch on radiator (left side radiator near crossover hose) somewhere And disconnect wire (make some kind of jumper wire and alligator clips available at auto parts stores or radio shak.) 2 turn on key 3.hook jumper to wire from that you removed from switch. hook other end of jumper to a ground ( anywhere on frame will do. fan should come on. If it does then fan motor is ok and the thermostat swtich is bad, replace it $56.00. if fan doesn't run fan motor is bad replace fan motor $184.11 I get parts for my 86 VFR700F2 from bikebandit.com with radiator cap off to remove air from system warm up bike until temp reaches 222'F snap throttle a few times (rev over 4500RPM) add coolant to top it off then add coolant to bring reservoir up to proper level as specified in manual.
I had the same problem after I bought the bike (used). I rode it on a cold day and didn't idle it enough. After getting stuck in traffic, it would overheat. I pulled the left side plastic off and found the plug was disconnected. It looked as though it had never been connected from the factory. So the bonehead that owned it before me never noticed that his fan wasn't kicking on. I simply plugged it in and everything was okay. I also did a compression test to make sure the motor had not been damaged - it was fine.
Turns out my coolant was low. There was nothing in the overfill tank. She went up to 221 degrees then dropped and leveled off at 220 during a long idle. Still not sure if my fan was working or not. I'll have my mechanic check it when he replaces my rear brake pads soon. Thanks! DJS
