My new to me 84 VF750

    Hi,

New to this site, am 24 and from Saskatchewan Canada

I finally brought home my VF750 I had been spying for some time. I bought it for $100

But it needs some engine work......crank and 2 rods, has new timing chain and chain tensioner and guides aswell as a brand new gears for 2nd.

My question is what other years of VFR'S can I use cranks and rods from.

Engine apart, not as bad as I thought it would be inside, pulled the bottom pan off the engine as
well expecting to find some nice chunks, but just a little bit of filings, nothing major

if you feel like rebuilding her you rebuild that bitch and you drive it till the wheels fall off........

look into the oil mod after you get it rebuilt... it will save you down the road , or at least thats what they say...

I have read and talked to other owners, they swear by changing the oil and filter regularly and that the engine will last a long time. I think what happened here is HONDA built an engine that was sub par compared to their other bikes, and people just neglected them. I have owned other bikes over the years where reviews have called them lemons and grenades, but if you maintain them meticulously you will have few problems

ok cool. good luck with the rebuild. i guess from your comments youve read of the cam lobe pitting problems associated with 'some' 1st gen engines.(not all engines suffered, but a fair number did). so its a good idea to look into the top end oiling mod while you've got her apart, and of course check your cam lobes for pitting.

please if you can do one other thing, once she running....put her back into the right colours for a 1st gen VF750. That yellow doesnot look good...
    this looks much better..

Sweet, I see you are a KIWI, my dad is a KIWI, and my sister is currently living in Palmerston North. Yes, it will either go back to stock colours or ALL BLACK with a silver fern on the tank. Could you post me the link to the top end oiling mod please. Thank you in advance!

There is a good reason I see a lot of the 1st gen engines at the local moto graveyard- they were shit then and they are shit now.
And Honda knew it. People buy Hondas so they don't have to meticulously maintain them- if you want that just do yourself a favor and get an pre-evo Harley.

Dookiedook, I totally agree with you on the harley point, but I mean just meticulous regular maintenance, ie changing the oil and filter often and not forgetting.........oh well
