they passed that law 4 months after I sold my GTO.
and I worked at a smog station at the time.
the reason I dont show my face in my bike pics is because of the big L on my forehead.

I REPEAT, I REPEAT, DO NOT USE OLD BIKE BARN!!!
They are the bane of the SOHC4 community, I have heard many horror stories of people that used them to buy their parts.

    Caveat emptor, peoples.

OK....I found a set of 4 Float needles on Ebay for a GL1500 and they are the same. $30..

Thanks to whoever made that list of motorcycles that use the same float needle.
And it cross references 4 brands of motorcycles too!!

K&L is a good source for this kind of thing. Lots' of cool stuff besides. I don't know if they're only dealer direct, but plenty of aftermarket parts distributors carry their stuff. I just ordered a set for a GL1100 (on your list) from Parts Unlimited. Dealer cost was around 17 bucks for a pack of six. From Honda, the needles were only available with the seats for around forty bucks apiece...ouch. Honda has just gone crazy on some carb parts for older bikes. For the same GL1100 the air cut diaphragm (each of the four carbs use one on this model) is around 80 bucks. K&L offers the same diaphragm for around 20 bucks apiece. To replace all the rubber in a bank of GL1100 carbs from Honda (four each gasket set, air cuts, float valve and one gasket for the air plenum) would be nearly 800 dollars!

The families that own the dealerships can sell the parts they decide they want to sell and they have no incentive to sell parts for older bikes.
All extra money at these dealerships is spent of fluff. Key chains hats t shirts, and 1500.00 aftermarket exhaust systems. etc.,.

The families that own the dealerships can charge whatever they want. And of coarse each family member gets a new house and Luxury SUV.

Haha...how true...I work for one of those families. Really I shouldn't complain as they've treated me fairly and they're not bad people. It does get old when (as in recent economic woes) you get the 'times are tough' speech. Anyway...that wasn't my original point.

I've always liked to use factory OE parts. But it's getting so they're pricing themselves out of the parts business and handing it over to the aftermarket. Using the GL1100 as an example (it's fresh in my mind as I have the carbs on my bench currently)...even if you were to buy the parts direct from Honda for cost, it would still be close to 500 bucks in parts just to replace the rubber stuff. This may be an extreme case as this model uses ALOT of parts that need to be replaced if you're gonna do a decent carb rebuild.

I understand. And should ANY complete carb rebuild kit cost $500.00? No. Or even $100 for few rubber o rings and some gaskets and a valve?
If I was wealthy I would just start making complete rebuild kits for any motorcycle carb $20.00 no matter which one it was.
I used to work in manufacturing and these components are sold for pennies each. It is all the middle men making money without doing ANY work.

Float needles used to be made out of metal not a rubber tip. The only reason the metal tip float needles went bad in the first place was that the carbs were bolted solid to the engine with a aluminum intake manifold and the vibration from the engine would wear a ring(step) on the metal needle. Then the manufacturers made the intake connection between the carb and the engine out of rubber so the metal carb was not touching the engine and the heat of the engine did not transfer to the carb. So they could have went back to all metal float needles and they would last more than one season. If I was manufacturing them I would make them out of brass. Brass seat and brass float needle. Or just make the carb like some light aircraft carbs. NO float needle. Just a auto fuel shut off when the ignition is turned off.

Of coarse now the new bikes have fuel injection and they can charge you hundreds of dollars just for one part.
Just like those $700-$1500 ridiculously expensive exhaust systems. They make you young guys think you have to have them and you have to work all year and save up just to buy one. Just think.... don't buy the expensive exhaust and have $1500 to go camping all summer on your bike.
