so finaly i got it back toghether (86 VFR700f opened for head gasket replacement) thanks to TC for the parts and all the articles with advise on different issues of the process.
when i started it back up- it will only run with choke on - and after a while it farts - iam running it with the air box off so maybe too lean i dont know.
also i did the work with the motor on the frame (cause iam too lasy) so the rear exhausts were a pain, i got them on but one of the gaskets must of fell off (it did cause i found it) and now its blowing exhaust out the head and sounds like a machine gun.
iam certain its the #1 cylinder exahust cause the #2 is smoking and is hot while #1 is not and is cold (the can)
so i retook it apart and iam about to remove the #1 exhaust and put the gasket back in-God help me with that!
i know there was a question in here somewhere that i wanted to ask, maybe i needed to hear what iam thinking i dont know if i think about it i ll get back to you:cool:

Good luck. Sounds like carb or ignition issues. Not sure how long your motor has been sitting while you monkeyed with the head gasket but I'd say your number 1 isn't firing. Put an old spark plug in the wire and ground it out against the head. Turn the motor over and see if she sparks. Good blue spark means you have carb issues (coupled with the fact that she only runs choked then farts, I'd say this is likely). Well, if you have good blue spark, you should check the plug in the hole too. But if you use an old plug and have no spark then you know to look at the ignition system. Checking spark is easiest so start there.

    Good luck.

    can't say.

Just know it's the easiest thing for you to check. And with all this wrenching around and wrestling with the motor to get to the rear exhaust tubes, your arms are straining all over the coil packs and associated wiring.

It has been quite some time since I did it last but I think if you remove that little heat shield on the rear of the frame (in front of the shock with two little rubber tabs on the bottom and a 10mm screw at the top) and use a quarter inch drive with a wobble it is pretty easily done. I have done it the other way as well and it is all but impossible .

thats how i got it in the first time (without the gasket) i took it off to put the gasket in and i cant get it back in for my life.
well! lesson learned when the book sais take the motor offin the begining - take it off- you guys think its farting and running only on choke cause too much air(air box off)?

I guess the first question is does the noise change when you pull the clutch in?

noise was coming from bottom of 3rd cylinder i thought it was the clutch but upon opening the panel and ever so slightly hitting the start botton just enough to make it spin 100 degrees or so i pined it to it. however in the process the starter gear mount broke so i guess there is my winter project- anyone got an extra engine case? lol

I cannot believe you would hit the starter button with the case partly removed!! WOW.
You would learn a lot by fixing your mistake.
But it seems like now days everyone just wants to get another engine.
But this economic depression which is getting worse just may force some
people to actually rebuild their engine.

Remember if you go get another engine it can have problems too,and it takes
all the same work to take it in and out of the frame and inspect everything and clean it.
Then the VIN number and engine number will not match. Also with that HISS security system you better get the key and COMPLETE wiring harness and all the little black boxes that connect to that security system.
Sounds like a mess to me.

    Still do not see photo.

Is the clutch case/cover broken or the center engine case?
The clutch cover /case is no big deal.

when i hit the starter button i watched the timing marks it squeeled on the the t3 mark every time - how should i read that to mean? the sound apeared to originate from behind the clutch basket.
