I just took the bike out around the block and it ran fine. I put it on the side stand and shut it off. 5 minutes later started it to take it back to the garage. When I got on it first it started bucking at about 3500 rpm, shift to second and the same thing. Now two things there is only one bar showing on the gas gauge, are these bikes prone to fuel starvation with low a fuel level? Also the bike was on center stand all winter, should I look at the side stand switch?

    Lots of things to check.
    Add fuel for sure
How old is your fuel filter?
    How old are plugs?
    How old is air filter?
Has your RR ever been changed? (When my rectifier was going bad, my bike just started dying out randomly due to suddent drops in voltage killing the injectors)

If it was stored all winter, did you either drain the tank or use gasoline stabilizer?

After you check the fuel level and fuel filter. I would test the voltage at idle (should be 12.7+), and at 5k (should be 13.5+). I would also pull off the rear cowl and inspect the R/R and the wires coming from the stator to the R/R. Those wires are too small of a guage for one, and with age they and the connectors start to build up resistance and can melt/burn the wires/connectors (I know this from experience). If you discover the R/R is bad, buy a replacement from Wire My Bike (owner is a member on here.."tightwad") and buy the VFRNess, and I would highly recommend buying two new wires and connectors for the stator and R/R. Again, I know this from experience. Once you do all that, most likely your R/R problems will be a thing of the past....assuming you had them in the first place. Oh, be sure to clean and check all of your battery connections as well.

What year is your bike? I've never experience fuel starvation issues at low levels with either of my bikes. Does your bike have a power commander on it by chance??

I just changed the rectifier. The bike was purchased in January so what ever fuel was in it is what is being burned. Voltage was asteady 14.5 at 5000 rpm. It will rev all the way to redline if you accelerate easily. It would only do it under hard accelleration. That is why it feels like fuel starvation. Also when it started bucking I glanced at the fuel gauge and it showed 0 fuel ,so I think I'll add a few gallons fresh fuel and let you guys know how I make out. Thanks

Just saying....since you already had a R/R failure (assuming that is why that you replaced it) I would still strongly encourage you to visit Wire My Bike and pick up a VFRNess, and some new connectors. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Unless you like punishment that is.... :xxx::ass:

The rectifier was an ounce of prevention. I bought this bike over the winter and have no history with it, I sure hope that I have not purchased an unreliable if not over engineered pos.

Just to update, after some tail chasing the culprit turns out to be partial failure of the side stand switch. It seems it made good enough contact to power things up to around 5500 and after that there was'nt enough juice to run the whole system. Go figure.
