You know, I was unable to manually turn over a GS700E i bought for $200 once. Found a screw in one of the cylinders. So I agree with removing the heads first, it's worth checking for foreign matter. Who knows what the previous owner did. Pulled the plugs and let it sit or worked on it without so much as a few rags stuffed in there.

You never know - maybe a squirrel crawled into one of the cylinders. Heh-heh . . . .

Toxic is in Monterey and the engine is on his way home so I will have him pick it up.If you need it we will work out a way to transport it to you and if not I am sure it will find a home in short order. For 70 bucks it is money in the bank.

    Those squrrrels!!

I went to visit a neighbor who ha a 998 Ducati and he removed the rear seat to show me the electronics UNDER the seat in a little plastic tray.
When we got the seat off there were two acorns stuffed in between the electronic boxes.

One time I went out to use my wire feed welding machine and wanted to look something up in the instruction book and
when I bent down to look in the second shelf there was an acorn there! I had just bought it new a few weeks earlier. Damn those squirrels.

Yea it all depends on my current situation with the engine I am working with. I took the heads off today and there was some rust on the tops of the rear cylinder walls. Front cylinders look OK. I am now in the process of getting to the lower end and finding the root cause of the problem. If shipping the engine is going to be outrageous cost-wise I do not think it will be worth the money right now.

When you dismantle the lower end, take care or the washers that are under the bolt heads. Make sure you buy new coper washers for the oil banjo's. Or this is a great time to do the oil mod (David Dodge). Here are some pics. also get a tube of Three bond for the resealing of the cases. hope this helps. Or buy Toe's motor..Mike R...Calgary..

Not as far out as it sounds...prolly be a mouse though. Apparently, mouse urine is really corrosive. I've seen it lock a snowmobile engine up solid by corroding the cast iron cylinder sleeves, and actually dissolve carburator pot metal material. I've seen valves corroded in guides so solidly that they had to be driven out forcefully with a punch (and they weren't bent either)...plenty tight enough to lock the engine.

The weirdest mouse thing I ever saw though was...a sled that wouldn't run on both cylinders after summer storage. Pulling the top off the carb on the dead cylinder I noticed the needle was bloody. Sure enough...curled up nicely in the fetal position was a dead mouse that somehow stuffed itself on the bore of the carb and decided to 'kak' right there.

I have the engine in the garage and will tear into it this week, the cams were stolen and some other parts but may make a good short block . Will let you know. No harm if you do not need it , I just figured for the price if just the lower end was good it was worth it as it will find a good home one day in this group. It was lifted out of a badly crashed bike so it stands to reason it was running the last time it was on the road.

Good deal. Any chance I can use the cams/rest of top end from my '84 and put it on this engine?
