So I'm doing my homework on this 2002 that I intend to buy next week and I find out that there is a safety recall on the main wiring harness and this bike is affected.

I searched the forum looking for information but obviously my search skills are a bit weak. Anyone had this done, stories advice offerings???

I called the local dealer and they knew all about it. They have ordered the harness and the work will be done before I attempt to ride the 2000 miles home. I'm a bit concerned about that kind of work being performed just prior to dispatch on a long ride like this but it needs to get done so I can import the bike.

Should I worry??/ Just another thing to mess with my head I guess or perhaps just adding color to the adventure.

The VFR harness recall isn't a big deal. I had mine done on my 05' and unless the maintenance guy is a total duchebag you shouldn't have any issues. Take a look at this thread for information regarding this recall.

:flip: Thanks for reminding me! :pound: :pound: :pound:

Don't worry jethro, the harness had nothing to do with the fire. It was an electrical issue with the house. Tink's just being, well TINK!

Wouldn't it be a HONDA since that is what the website is about.

I just was not sure which model we were talking about, or which size.

Any way you can just google the name of the bike and follow with the word complaints.
HERE IS WHAT I FOUND for 2002 Honda VFR800 (if that is the model and size in question.)

Summary: ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE FRONT FAIRING SUB-HARNESS (SECTION OF THE WIRING HARNESS) TRANSFERS THE ELECTRICAL GROUNDING LOAD OF THE HEADLIGHTS, FRONT TURN SIGNALS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, AND VARIOUS RELAYS TO THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS VIA AN 18-PIN CONNECTOR. UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, THE GROUND WIRE TERMINALS INSIDE THE CONNECTOR CAN OVERHEAT, RESULTING IN MELTING OF THE CONNECTOR AND A LOSS OF POWER TO VARIOUS CIRCUITS.

Sorry, it's a 2002 VFR dressed in RED with a set of two brothers pipes and a power commander.

It's always nice to know what is behind the recall and what they are up to when they perform the work. Sounds like it is well warranted and the bike will be better and more reliable after completion. The shop said that they have done a few so it is nothing new to them but I had to provide the VIN so they could get the part coming. Apparently Honda will not release the harnesses without a VIN to track which bikes have received the updates.

It does complicate matters a bit but at least I have safe storage for the bike for the week and I don't need to impose on any members. Here is a shitty picture of the beast. I'll have much better shots when I get there and hopefully a very entertaining and picture filled story about the ride home.

Especially since there is no duty and since I'm riding it, no shipping either! But the really great part is it gives me an excuse to tour half the continent and my wife agreed to the terms. If I were to propose a four day tour starting from home it likely wouldn't happen.

The front fairing subharness and a couple other goodies are for sure, but an important part of the recall IS somewhat discretionary. The MAIN harness side of the blue 18 pin ground connector is to be inspected. If any sign of heat or melting is observed, Honda must be notified to authorize and replace the main harness as well. I've done a few of those recalls, and I replaced the main harness on one. If you don't trust the dealer, you may want ask them if you can view the replaced fairing subharness and inspect the 'mating' side of the blue 18 pin coupler yourself. If that side of the coupler shows sign of melting or excessive heat, it's pretty likely the main harness side of the coupler has also.

    Thanks Dizzy,

I spoke with Leonard in the service department at Honda Suzuki North (Farmers Branch TX) yesterday and he is ordering the whole harness for basically this reason. Can't see the point in ordering one item and finding out that you need the full monty after the bike is in the shop especially when we have only three days to complete the job. He talks a good story so I'm hopeful that the work is equivalent.

Oh...that's good. To find out if it needs a whole harness only takes a few minutes. The clear vinyl boot that contains the connector in question is right behind the upper left cowl. It can actually be accessed by removing a couple cowl fasteners, pull out lightly and it's right there.
