Fuel gauge - VERY non-linear? Course below 5K rpm?

I just picked up a 2007 25th Ann. model. I have two questions...

1. I filled it up and after only 60 miles, the fuel gauge is down to just over half. Is the gauge that non-linear, or is thing sucking fuel like it's the last supper? It doesn't smell rich, so I'm leaning toward non-linear.

2. The engine sounds pretty course below 5K, vibrates a bit, and it doesn't like to get up and go until over 5K. This is my first V engine bike, so I'm not sure what it should sound like.

I really like this bike, and the hard cases make it much more sensible. Just making sure it's running as it should...

The fuel gauge on my 2004 is not linear nor very accurate. It rarely shows full after filling the tank. It also seems like the last two bars last forever. It usually goes about 180 miles before it starts flashing. I'm interested to read what others say.

 

my 92 (and I assume all vfr's) are non linear... calculate MPG at the next tank and go from there. No fix to my knowledge, but you should see 150-200 miles/tank depending on your riding style

 

Nope it cant really be made linear either since the gas tank has a irregular shape to it. The only way it will show full is if you pretty much top it off. The first half does go fast when i had my 02' but the lower half did go pretty darn slow. At the 1/4 mark there is still half a tank of gas inside so its reading a bit under rated. On my ZX14 its the other way around, even if i put 3/4 tankful it reads full even though its not, the last half goes by in less then 50-60 miles.

 

Shouldn't be running rough below 5k if it's warmed up. Run a can of Seafoam though it yet?

 

A low rpm "Stumble" has been reported by a few folks. The power band definitely picks up over 5k.
Power Commanders have been used by many riders to smooth things out.

 

Thanks for the responses. My Yamaha's gauge is fairly linear... or at least moreso than the Honda. No big deal. I just need it to warm up enough outside and stop raining long enough to burn through a tank of gas. I'm in the bottom half of the gauge now and it's moving much slower. Good enough.

I haven't run Seafoam through, but it's only got 1600 miles on it. Although now that I say (or type) that, that could be an issue too. I'll do it for kicks and see what happens. It doesn't really so much stumle as it is rough - it really shakes the mirrors until about 5K. It's likely just too low an rpm for the engine.

 

I have a 2006 and the vibration / shake thing below 5000 RPM was surprising to me when I first rode a VFR800. I figured it'd have more torque at lower speed but it really does not. It loves 5000-6000 RPM though, very smooth and perfect for cruising.

With the VTEC on it's quite buzzy (above 6600 RPM). That kinda sucks when you want to ride smooth and have to force it to stay 5000-6500 RPM.

Keep track of your mpg over a few tanks. The gauge is not linear. To get the tank to read full at most fill ups, you will need her on the center stand. Even then the first bar on the gauge will go away after about 15 miles. Most of us on the 6th gen average 40-42mpg and a little less when getting on it, which works out to somewhere around 180 miles before the light starts blinking at us.

Mine is silky smooth below 5k and I don't start getting anything rough till below 2500rpm. I suggest checking your plugs and perhaps checking to see if the starter valves are synced properly. Bone stock you are bound to find that the throttle is choppy but it is that way due to how Honda has done things for emissions.

 

Old thread but my 03 would never read full after the wiring recall work. Used to when new . I used some dielectric grease on the connector prongs and guage now reads full.

If you want to try a VFR with impressive pull below 5000, find an earlier carbed 750.

 

I just fill up when I get down to two bars / Not sure how much is left when last bar flashing.

Under 5k I have a lot of stumbling - not good.. especially when I filled it with crappy gas from a local Coop gas.. when I switched to Chevron 94 the stumbling stopped - but I must admit when it is warmed up it runs better.
