    Hi!
While fixing a leaking crankcase cover gasket i noticed a loose chain (think it is the oil pump chain behind the clutch). Is it supposed to be that loose or might there be a problem with that.
The bike is vfr 750 and the year 1993 i think.
It ran OK 2 years ago and nobody has touched it since.

In my factory service manual, there is no spec for the oil pump drive chain. There is no adjustment mechanism for tightening. I'm sure there's little torque on the chain and you have to figure it's bathed in a shower of falling oil whenever it's running.

    Thanks for the info!
If there is no adjusting system then a slack should be acceptable.

Having had numerous of those type engines apart, I can tell you it's normal for those chains to be pretty loose. However, I've also seen one break on your exact year and model. I'd check the sideplates carefully for any sign of cracking, or since you have it apart just replace it. It's not very expensive.
