Well guys she is done mechanically, the reason I didnt post last night was we spent so much time on the road and got home so late I din't have time to post. She needs sync'ing but that's just waint on my tool to arrive. I been everywhere locally on her trying to see if any bugs would pop up and this bike is so solid I havent got off it since we rolled her out the garage. I would post the final pictures but I left my camera in Wellers garage. I'm very impressed with this bike so far. All my questions on performance have been answered. All my boys ride 1000's and I had no problems keeping up with them. I can't hang on the take off but give me a few to get her up and she closes the gap really fast but my advantage is handling, I thought as heavy as she is she would be hard to control oh hell no she responds very well and against those bigger cc bikes my mid range power is pefect for getting in and out of spots. She don't ride like a heavy bike at all. She has nice positioning too so the ride is comfortable. I came to discover really fast that I need some luggage for mine. Does anyone know if it is still availiable for this bike?

Also we noticed for a 700 is physically huge, she is longer than a GSXR 1000 and Yamaha F1 and I think I can out range both of then on fuel too. I got the oldest girl in the stable but someone forgot to tell her, her age. I see why folks upgrade the mirrors the originals look nice but they so short all I see behind me is my shoulders but I can live with it for a few weeks until I can upgrade again. So far I havn't found anything bad about her. Best $200 bucks I ever spent.

Took her to the mountians yesterday and overall she was great but my slow point was the suspension. I pushed her hard to see what my limits where and she made it halfway up before it let me know that was it. Keep in mind every bike in the group was 1000's and I was right there with them until the suspension started floating. She was fine though. The most intriqing part was we met at Star Bucks and out of all the bikes there the VFR caught the attention, one guy was amazed I was willing to take it on the trip. He didn't think she could handle it. I made sure I stayed infront of him the whole way up and coming down I completly left him. I was and the waiting point completly undressed by the time he got there. I told him he was taking so long to get down I was starting a camp fire. Pissed him off something terrible. He tried to show mw up on the highway heading back home also. He wasnt willing to push his bike past 115 but mine does 140 easy. Needless to say he don't want to ride with us anymore.

I pushed her hard guys and she responded. I don't want to post a picture yet cause my seat still needs to be done but it's coming I'll get them on here.

Good to hear the bike is treating you well.

The synch screws are attatched to the throttle linkanges poiting down to the V when you look under the carb bank.
The mixture screws are actually the pilot screws on the inside of the cab bodies and you only want to set them to 2 or 2.5 turns out at initial carb cleaning/breakdown.

Best results require setting mixture screws according to factory service manual's "idle drop proceedure" BEFORE throttle synchronization.

You really need service manual to do this right.

Progressive (brand) springs help the front suspension, and fork oil should be changed.

It's been a good story, Curry; glad it worked out so well for you !!

Can you support this statement with more information? Namely your emphasis on "BEFORE" sync.

Seems to me it should be opposite. Sync is really just a measure of how much vacuum is created in the intake manifold. In theory, you could have a dead cylinder and still sync the carbs. The exhaust stroke clears the cylinder and when the intake valve opens with the piston going down, you get vacuum drawn. adjusting the butterfly increases or decreases the ammount of vacuum created and really has little to do with combustion.

    However;

The balance of the carbs can have a huge affect on your ability to percieve an increase or decrease in idle RPM while adjusting the mixture screws. If one cylinder is out of wack and isn't carrying it's full share of the load, you won't notice any change in RPM as you adjust the screws. Therefor, it's my belief that sync is more criticle to perform before idle mixture adjustment.

Please advise if I'm missing the boat somewhere. Thanks

How are you supposed to adjust the pilot screws when the carbs are attached and the filter box is on??

This would seem to be an impossible task at best.

I read the manual, it only tells you to adjust the pilot screw per California/49 initial settings or for adjusting for altitude and then leave it alone.

You mean the air mixture screw? I think Keihin calls it an air mixture screw but one of the repair manuals I have calls it a pilot screw.

on my 1st gen it was completely accessbile with the airbox and tank mounted. There's a tamper-proof(resitant) cap covering the screw which must be removed. Otherwise, they are completely accessible from the side of the bike.

The idle drop method is simply; turn the screw one direction until you notice a change in RPM. Turn the screw the opposite direction until you notice a change in RPM. Set the screw at the mid-point between the changes in RPM.

Speak English Got-dammit. Confusing the hell out of me. I'll have Weller read this before he syncs the carbs so we are all on the same page. I don't want him trying to figure it out for the 1st time and mess stuff up.

In the mean time anyone know where to find saddle bags for this ole girl?

On my bike the pilot screws all face inward, you can't get to them from the outside.
    Kinda tough to adjust, no?

Very, very, very few around. Your gonna have to search and search and still get lucky I think. I saw this on another forum.
Don't know where you can get one though.

I believe two of the screws face left and two of them face right. 1-3 face one direction and 2-4 face the opposite. Memory tells me this makes two of them easier to adjust and two of them more difficult. (like 1 and 4 might be easy but 2 and 3 are hard or vice versa). Regardless, they are probably easier to access than the sync screws.

    Guess Who's Back?

Hey guys been away for a while work has had me and Weller busy but a lot has happened in the last few weeks, so much infact I don't know where to begin. Weller has done so many small jobs on this bike we have lost count on what has been done. The thing that has the bke down right now is the carbs. On the day we got the sync tool I was riding from my house to Weller's I had to put a couple of gallons of gas in her cause I wanted to see how many miles I was getting till reserve but I didn't want to chace 14 miles on fumes so I got gas on base before I hit the highway. On the walst mile to his house upon exiting the highway she started idling high and refused to idle down. I had been holding steady at idle at around 1100 rpms but now she was boucing back and fourth aroud 3500 to 4000. We figured no harm since we was about to sync her anyway it would go away.

Well we learned the hard way sync'ing is an absolute pain in the ass but thanks to Weller doing his homework on the site here he sync'd her perfect but I had been riding her on basically 2 and a half cylinders ( yea she was way off) but that made me proud cause I took her to the mountains like that and she performed well so I hate to see how she does fully opperational. During the sync we opened up that closed carb and OMG did she cut up something terrible smoking and not holding idle. We could not for the love of christ get that bike to hold idle that day. We adjusted and aligned twisted and turned and just like that she ran perfect. She was tuned so well we decided to hit the road and head to the mountains. Well on the way at about 65 miles an hour she started stalling on the highway like she was missing ( I forgot to mention we changed the spark plugs before the sync) but that was Weller's 1st guess hat 1 of the plug wires had come loose. We checked it out and one had worked itself off so we plugged her up and hit the road again. AS soon as I hit 55 mph she started it again like she was missing, this time Weller got on her and I noticed the chain was drouping something terrible so we wondered if slipage could be the culprit.

We went back to the lab jacked her up and tightened the chain buttoned her up and hit the road again this time a shorter trip to Fresno and needless to say we didn't make it, the same hessitation was there. I tried to see if I could blow it out took her up to a 125 mph for about 3 miles and during the high speed run I would let the throttle go and try to twist back on but the timing was off to put in words I would let the throttle go and when I turned it back on the bike would pause before catching and continue to acellerate. I gave her to Weller and had him do the same and he said it had to be the carbs something inside the carbs wasn't right. Weller has since gone to town on them. All I can say is that he read the post on carbs here on the forums got some acitone and went to town. All we are waiting on now is a float adjustment tool we had to order from Honda. If we don't get it this time I have no choice now but send the carbs to TOE and have him do them for me.

The other good thing that came out of it is Weller rode her for the 1st time and I don't know what he felt in the brakes he didn't like he has rebult the entire brake system on the bike. I think her brakes are better than his GSXR. He also figured out someone had put the fuel filter on wrong andf she wasn't drawning enough fuel. There have been a lot of little finds like that. He has joined the forums I don't know when he will make a post but he feel part of the VFR family even though he rides a suzuki. I told him you guys will welcome anyone serious about sharing knowledge about motorcycles regardless of what they ride and he has logged so many hours on my VFR he should get a honorary pass. Well anyway this is where we stand. Are we on track with the carbs causing this miss feeling?

Was reading another post and found away to describe the missing feeling as Surging, that what she doing and constant idle she's surging.

One common problem is the fuel relay. Some of them when they get hot start problems making it miss or even die completely. Toe told me this when I was having some issues.

Tex, Weller says he doesn't think its my relays, he feels all my problems are in the carbs. We are waiting patiently on the Float tool and I think we many have it. Lord knows I'm ready to ride. I do have 1 small issue. I went to the decal site in the sticky above and was gong to order my decals but didn't know the size. Can someone tell me what the size of the interceptor in the back and the honda on the side of the tank? I like the huge Honda on some of the 750's but I don't know how it would look on my 700.

Hey Curry, I would test those relays if I were you, problems could be in the carbs though, hard to know until you pull them.
If you are talking about the Extremedecals site, they do not sell the stripes, just the lettering for the VFR750/700F
reproductiondecals.com sells entire sets or individual decals including the stripes.

Dukie, I went to that site and could not find a thing Honda. I don't need any stripes my bike is Black and white I only need the letters no stripes. I just need the honda on the tank, interceptor for the rear and VFR for the lower front Fairings. I'm far from the normal paint scheme, and plan on doing my own thing with the decals. With so much emphasis on the relays once we get the carbs back on I will have Weller check them out. We got to get to the bottom of this but we have to wait till the carbs are back on. If it is the relays I bet they are another one of those super rare Honda charges 200 buck items. I'll keep you posted.

Curry, just an FYI... I've been following your predicament the past couple days and took your issue to my instructor at school. I described the surging and how she stalled out on you after you dialed her in with the sync tool. His first reaction was to make sure it wasn't electrical (he's my Clinic 4 Electrical instructor... go figure). He said to make sure that your relays and coils aren't shorting out at operating temps, primarily your ignition coil. If one shorts, it'll still run but you'll only be on 2 or 3 cylinders at best. He doubts that this is the problem cause they rarely go out, but recommended checking it nevertheless. If that's not the cause, then it's your float levels for his next step (I didn't even mention that you had guessed it or ordered the tool). Since you've already got them on order, you're covered there.

If the prob is def not electrical, and you set your bowl heights to spec and she STILL won't work, he wants me to let him know and we'll see where to go from there. Good luck.

Oh, and a "Holy Crap!!!" on the 140 mph!!! Much braver than I am, Sir! I hit 120 on her last week but that was by accident, she got a bit carried away getting on the freeway with full throttle in 5th gear:biggrin:

Lazy, good looking man appreciate you taking my issue to school, now I got some ammo for Weller that mabe we should take a look at the electrical system. He swears from his checks that everything is cool but we can't really argue that until we get the carbs back on. I have to roll with my mechanic bro and our military training and until we prove it isn't the carbs (Weller) won't look into something else. It's that whole base point to begin troubleshooting thinking, until we have the carbs back on and she what's she's doing, we will then follow the path from those results. The one thing we have not touched on the bike is the electronic stuff Weller did install a fuel pressure gage in the fuel system to act like a early warning system so if the relays do start going bad or fuel pump I can tell if it's affecting the fuel flow by a quick glance at the gage a must have for older bikes. My only concern now is if i do have a relay or coil problem the base reading we get from the fuel gage won't be accurate in the 1st place. Man you got to love project bikes there is always something new to get you looking forward to the weekend now we got to come up with a way to test fuel flow and see how much fuel the pump actaully puts out. Time to pay the fuel cell guys at work a visit.

But in the mean time the float tool is suppose to arrive at Honda today, and you hit it on the head with us free balling the floats the 1st time, after reading the manual we know we where off so I think that may fix it. The good news is I know for a fact what ever it is isn't major and is within our skill level we just need to isolate it. We will be on her full throttle tomorrow afternoon so I'll post updates as we go.
