I am changing my chain and sprockets on my 99 VFR. I opted for the D&D chain with JT sprockets. However, when my sprockets were ordered, the parts guy wrote down the number for a different brand drive sprocket. It is still supposed to fit my make and model of course. Where I need help is for the drive sprocket. The stock one I took off has a rubber flange on both sides that you can see where the chain links pressed into it. The replacement does not have this. Does anyone see this as a plus to have the flanges? Also, when I put on the drive sprocket and torqued it the the 38 ft lbs listed in my manual, it has back and forth play in it. Is this normal? Any help would be appreciated. My project still sits unfinished in the garage, so please help!

Back and forth play is not normal and is probabyl the result of the sprokect not being as wide as the one you took off. When I chaned my chain and sprockets, I got an RK chain and Vortex sprockets from sumofallparts.net. I had no problems the the front srpocket and it was the same width as the OEM one. I even ordered a second front srpocket (15 tooth) and have had no problems with it. I also went from a 530 pith chain to a 520 pitch chain. No problems in that department either with more than 4K on them.

From my experience a little bit of slop of the sprocket on the shaft "in and out" isn't a problem. This should be a very minimal amount though. No more that 1/16". I may be wrong but the sprockets we order for our 600cc powered racecars have a little bit of slop, as does the factory front sprocket.

Thanks for the input everyone. I decided to take the new drive sprocket off and put the old one back on. It has the same amount of play as the new one. It is not much, just enough that you can feel the movement. So I will now put the new one back and go with it. Hopefully it will be nice and dry for the weekend.

I just adjusted my chain for the first time since buying my '01. I don't know if the previous owner had, but I assume that he did. I bought it with about 28000 miles, and did my first chain adjustment at 34000. It looks like I am probably about at the maximum adjustment point, now. How long do you guys typically go before replacing the chain (miles), and when you do, what brand do you buy?

    Thanks,

    Mel

Wow am I reading that right, 6K between an adjustment wow, what
lube do you use? No really on the norm, I check my chain every time I come in from a good ride, say 300 miles of a lot of getting it down. seems it was like about every other time I needed to adjust the chain just a bit, as I never let it get more than an 1.5 inchs of sloop. tend to keep in the area of 3/4"-1" when setting on the bike at it's tightest location, so whats that about every 5-600 miles I take up on the slack, even thou it's very little it's still some that I believe shouldn't be there. Man I'd like to see your chain, very interested in it's wear and the like. Okay that said my last two VFR's I got over 20K out of em, but this last one only saw what I believe is 12K as I don't know how the last owner took care of it. Seems like a short life span, but hey it's gone, so now I'm good to go 20K again. I went OEM sprockets from Service Honda, and a RK gold GB530XSO530 chain.

Hey guys... check out any number of the web sites with a Honda parts fiche. You can get Honda's original chain/sprocket kit which will last 10-13000 miles with some care. The aluminum sprockets will never outlive the original steel one. The OEM chain is top notct DID I think.
