    Hello Everybody,

I'm Bill C. from up in Orygun.

This is my introductory message even though I've been lurking/checking out various threads since my VFR mentor has been pushing me towards one of these bikes for ~a year now.

I finally made my move and picked up a nice '99 5th Gen (which he claims is the Holy Grail of Sports/Touring Viffers).

I'm not totally new to bikes in that this one is #32 for me.

Guess I've got to admit I'm now an "old guy".

This is my first "big" Honda although it sits next to a slightly smaller SV650-S in the garage.

    Hmm...what else?

O.k., I'm an ex-AFM Road Racer from "back in the day" of the late '60s-early '70s.

The reason this is bike #32 is because back then I typically had/raced 3-5 at a time and you can go through a lot of them in 5+ seasons of racing.

Bikes I've raced have been some of the exotic Honda "CR" Roadracers, a gaggle of 125, 250 and 350cc Yamaha racers (once they got fast, and reliable), a lone, beautiful Ducati GP racer, a couple of 250cc Bultaco Metralla Mk II-"RS" Production bikes, Suzuki X-6 and a sNorton Cammando.

"Streetbikes" have been pretty limited, but have included various on/off road bikes including Honda SL125, XL350 & Yamaha TT500. Let's see there's also been a Honda CB92R, a CB160, a CB750, Yammy RZ350 and some others...

My affiliation with bikes has always had more to do with racing than it has with street riding. (Maybe this VFR will alter that a little?)

I get to spend some time behind a lens these days to get my racing "fix", kind of hanging in there one way or the other.

Here's an example of some of my images. (Maybe you'll see somebody you know?)

    Regards,
    Bill C.

That would be the 3rd gen. But close enough.

    Welcome to the site!

The '99 is a 5th Gen. I think he was trying to say that the 3rd Gen in the Holy Grail. Wait about an hour or two, and you'll have someone tell you the 4th Gen is the Holy Grail. But I know you're all wrong,......the 6th Gen is the Holy Grail!

    Could be?!!

But then again I DID "Read up" on them, as I mentioned.

Being a member of the Gear Drive Cam Club, I'm thinkin that anything that doesn't make that "whirr" noise might be something less?

And also a motor design that costs $800 to get its valve clearance adjusted is out of my league.

Welcome aboard Bill! You're correct there, '98-'01 are regarded as the 5th generation of VFR's.

    Welcome aboard.
Dig your story. Nice to have folks around who are firmly rooted in the world of moto.

By the way, you missed the Holy Grail by one year. It is the 2000.

I came this " close to getting a cherry 2000.

But, it had those catalytic pipes on it...oh and was a Cali model.

The one I ended up picking was a 49 State model with 12K miles on it.

I'll eventually post pics of it (hopefully with some breathtaking scenery as a backdrop) cuz it looks basically stock, although I've been working on mods to it in the past week. Got my new/improved R/R and VFRness on it last weekend. Today's project is installing Helibars and Throttlemeister.

That is if prepping for going Salmon fishing tomorrow and Friday out on the River don't get too much in the way. Oh yeah, while I was at work yesterday Mr. UPSman showed up with an antique European Black Powder Cartridge Rifle that got rechambered for the old .50-70 Gov't cartridge. Now I'm torn in which direction to go next? I'd like to get out and shoot it, and today's sunny out, which means ALL of those choices appeal almost equally.

    Hmm...decisions decisions!

Yeah, also gotta call and find out where the Sargent Seat is for the Viffer.

Susanville eh? Wow, that's some nice country down there. I've gone fishing on Eagle Lake before for those monster Eagle Lake hybrid Trout; wouldn't mind doing that again.
