Okay guys, so today I picked up a 1991 Honda VFR750F, First bike, the guy that sold it to me told me the battery was bad/weak but good enough to get me home, well it was, almost, heres the deal if I charge (battery tender) it over night I can make it about 20 miles before the bike dies so I know there is something wrong with the STATOR or the RECTIFIER, anyone had a similar issue? anything I can rule out, I have a volt meter, any points I should test, thanks a bunch guys!

The regulator / rectifier is a known problem for the VFR. Check that. There is a test you can do to see if it's ok. I just replaced mine because it was leaking black stuff out of it. They run about $115 new as an aftermarket part. You can find for cheaper. Here's one from Dennis Kirk: Electrosport R/R Check it out. Good luck.

The related wire connections tend to be heat damaged as well . Inspect and repair as needed.

Thanks Guys, Also Laid my new Bike Down This morning on a ride, where I live it snows in the winter months and I was going through a turn and and there was a huge pile of salt (almost unavoidable it took up almost all of the lane in with and was about 10-15 feet long) with a pick up truck (for construction) and long story short I ended up with some wicked road rash and my bike ended up under the truck :(... I rolled like a rag doll for about 30 feet and hit my head once (i don't think that hard but everything happened so fast) (It was bleeding, not a deep laceration, and no my dumba$$ wasn't wearing a helmet since I wasn't going more than 10min away I didn't think it was necessary, I know horrible thinking) so long story short the front bracket Upper Fairing cowl, lower fairing cowl (left side) mirrior, and windscreen all broken and things were bent and things of that nature, so I prepped it and now I am looking for a set of cheap fairings... Ebay doesn't seem to have any and that one company wants $650 for a set of front fairings! the nc30 fairings sell for 250 on ebay!! Any Ideas?!

Can you give me a link to some cheap fairings? And is there a way to test the rectifier?

probably do a search in the forum and find a thread where it's been beat to death already - it's a known problem and come up here more than once (a week).

This year bike is also known to have extreamly difficult to find fairings. Good luck

    Wanna sell it?

Factory service manual is great for testing charging system.

Do stator tests first at the 3 yellow wire plug: no continuitry between any wire and ground, and continuity between any 2 wire pairs is a good stator.

If stator checks OK and there are no burned/melted connections either at the 3 wire plug or on top of starter relay, then R/R is probably shot .

"Shindengen" means "Start walking, sucker" in Japanese.

Check charging voltage across battery terminals with engine running.

VERY SORRY about your crash, but good, used fairings for that bike are as rare as duck antlers.

The electrical problems are the result of having an 8 spoke rear wheel. I am very experienced at properly disposing of these pesky wheels so if you want I'll PM you my address so you can quickly rid yourself of it muhahahaha

Sorry about the accident and as previously mentioned you will have a very difficult time finding used plastic for the 3rd Gen unless you are willing to pay for aftermarket stuff that will require painting and modification to accomodate the headlight and turn signals. This is best left to a proffesional which will cost $$$

With this being said, be warned that the quality of the Airtech stuff is nowhere near the quality of the OEM plastics. The bottom line is that unless you really got a steal on the bike it may not be worth fixing because you can easily spend the same amount of money on repairs as the bike is worth (depending on overall condition and mileage)

What state are you located in? There is a guy here in Milford, CT that does plastic welding. I called him up on my 3rd gen and he couldn't give a price without seeing the plastics. Here's the website: Cycle Salvage. Also, found this guy on craigslist today. He's parting out a 93 VFR. Hope that it helps: 93 VFR Parting out. As far as the rectifier goes, get a service manual and there is a check in there that you can do. Here is a link to a PDF Service Manual: Honda-VFR750F-1990-1996-Service-Manuall. Good Luck.

Thanks guys huge help, I think I might just bite the bullet and get the streamline kit, what nods would be necessary? I am an auto mechanic so I can make a few half add brackets to hold the plastics on, I just want to know what I Sam getting into before I buy the upper and lower cowl... I know, expensive mistake!

dude, I sent you a link in chat last night. we need voltages for bike off, bike running and 5K rpms, I also sent a link on how to diagnose. The rectifier is THE MOST common problem on these bikes and I dont know why you cant either use the links we have all provided or use search.

Lots of good info for you in this thread:

    http://vfrworld.com/forums/mechanics-garage/29258-battery-new-wont-stay-charged-any-ideas.html

Don't go riding that thing around until you get this figured out or you could cause more problems.

I think I saw you post in chat last night that you read the voltages and they were coming out fine? Something about "the crash musta knocked some sense into it"? Note that some of these electrical components will work cold and fail hot.

Sorry I can't be more specific, I haven't had to test one (yet).
