Acer Aspire AM3202-EF8100A Desktop Computer | Desktops - English | TheSource.ca This is the best I could find for my $500 limit. It will be replacing my 8 year old blue screen of death beast. I don't know too much about them (kind of lost interest after demise of DOS), but I couldn't find any other quad cores in the price range. Any advice or hot leads from the more gifted would be appreciated.
Realistically, you will not notice a difference in speed between a system with a dual core processor and a system with a quad core processor, unless you are running video editing programs or CAD programs with intensive processing requirements. I have been working in IT for about 10 years now and I find that my Pentium 4 is more than enough for what I need. If you are open to other options check the link below. suggest newegg.com or looking at all of the major brands sites at the scratch & dest locations. Bought three of them so far and no issues.
I would go with a slightly slower processor in order to get better quality hardware. Buddy of mine just had the blue screen hit his 1 yr old Acer. Sony, HP are decent desktops and my Toshiba laptop has lasted me 4 years with no headache.
Keep an eye on RedFlagDeals.com Forums - Canada's Shopping Deals and Coupons Community there's some good deals posted there from time to time. What do you want the computer for? Surfing and email, games, photo or video editing?
I highly suggest watching Slickdeals.net: The best coupons, deals and bargains to save you money! for a few weeks and see what pops up on the front page there. Every few days there will be at least one deal for a desktop or laptop show up. There is nothing wrong with most of the name brands that you can buy short of e-machines and something from wal-mart. Dell, HP, Toshiba, Gateway, and Acer are all reliable brands. 90% of them all use the same parts anyway and just make it look different on the outside.

Thanks for the replies, gang. I don't like to replace my computer very often, which is why I like to get the one that will last the longest( technology wise). This is why I was thinking quad vs dual core(bad logic?). I do use photoshop and kitchen cabinet design software, which are the hogs, but would like to be able to start playing some of the newer games again. My bro tried to build me one at Newegg, but said he couldn't match it. I have been looking around for awhile, missed the win7 free upgrade window, stupid vista. Being Canada doesn't help either, because the free shippng always turns into WTF. I am just hoping for a little direction/education, because I am lost when it comes to i this and q that. Thanks

Acer Aspire AS8735G-6198 Okay, thanks for the replies, the more I learn, it appears, the more I change my mind. I did know I wanted HDMI o/p and something that won't be outdated this time next year. Impossible, I know. I found and bought this one today at Staples, for $700. I know, much more than I had planned on spending, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Plus I made the mistake of taking my wife with me. She is a gadget freakaholic. Markways - Acer Aspire AS8735G-6198 I now have 14 days to complete my research and decide to keep it, or return it.
Assuming the link you posted it right and you went with a laptop instead of a desktop My only comment would be with a laptop your stuck with next to no upgrade options other than adding more RAM. A desktop you can add parts here and there as time passes, assuming of course that it doesn't use a all-in-one motherboard with no free slots for upgrading.
Yes a laptop. I figured with the 1GB video card and Blu-ray player that there wouldn't be too much more I would want to upgrade. Of course I could be wrong. The one I got is not refurbished and it's blue. I've been researching like  and all this number crunching is starting to hurt my head. Back at it. "You appear to be in a country where we do not have an online Microsoft Store." :frown:
Just beware my parents bought a CPU from Staples and when I had to fix it this year (hard-drive failure) The drive was labeled refurbished. They believed the purchase was for a new one as well. sometimes new just means never owned but may have refurbished parts installed. FYI
Did the salesman lie? When I was discussing the purchase, he said that there was a new one in the back. When he brought it out, it was clear that the seal had been broken. He turned it on and stated that because the first time bootup was running, that it had never been turned on before. Not thinking he would lie to me, I swallowed it hook, line and sinker. (these guys are not on commission) So I get it home, go to the Acer website and plunk in the serial number. To my amazment, it has been registered in someone's name already and the warranty is counting down. I can only assume that when the previous owner returned it, they must have wiped it and reinstalled the original setup. I'm guessing that there is probably nothing wrong with it, but the thought of him lying to me and probably having a good chuckle with the rest of his geek squad over it is driving me . I could try another store, ask for a discount, or just return it. Any suggestions? Sorry for the long post. You know how rants can get out of hand.
It was hard to say no to a 18.4" laptop I finally decided to get the blu-ray laptop, after they threw in the extended warranty. According to the receipt, I ended up paying $550 for it. Let's see how fast that porn can download now! Thanks for the tips guys.
