    Hey guys,

While riding my 1996 4th-generation today (awesome day here btw) I noticed my speedometer fluttering to zero when I was riding above 40 mph. After the hour ride, i checked the battery with my voltmeter and it was normal. What are some things I need to check? Is there a loose connection somewhere? Thanks for any input.

This could be a sign that your R/R (regulator/rectifier) is starting to go bad and pre 6th Gen VFR's are notorious for this problem. It could also be something as simple as a loose battery or ground connection. Does the bike have a speedo healer on it by chance? Are you measuring the voltage while the bike is off or while it is running?

Hey Rollin, I had replaced the original r/r when it went kaput a year or so ago...I guess I may need to get another one, eh? I will check the battery connection. I don't think it has a speedohealer...I was gettin 12. 75-80 volts when it is off...around 13.65 or so when it is running...

Ooops I just realized that you have a 4th Gen which has an analog speedo so the problem is not going to be electrical. Have you replaced your sprockets or chain lately? The reason I ask is that the speedo drive nut is right behind the front sprocket cover and it may be worn out or not seated properly.

Rollin's right: the plastic nut that drives the speedo and fits against the front sprocket bolt is probably damaged.

    Lube cable too.

I thought the G4 had an electric speedo. I would guess the sensor (nylon part described above). here are the diagnostic steps

The 4G speedo is electronic. As others have stated, there is a nylon "nut" on the front sprocket that runs the speedo sensor.

The diagrams above should work you through the problem.

I could have sworn I remembered seeing an analog speedo on my friends 4th Gen but I guess I am wrong. As I previously mentioned check the nylon drive nut using the instructions above. Don't be intimidated it really is very simple to do. If that doesn't work then start troubleshooting the electrical components as I previously mentioned.
