Does the shape of a pipe play any role in it's sound? Micron offers round and oval pipes (not to mention color options.) I love the way my bike looks stock, and do not want to change the look. Therefore I am looking at buying a plain ol' polished auminum round can. Should I assume it'll sound as good as all the ovals, or will I be selling myself short?

According to TwoBros (they SUCK!!!) the shape makes no difference.

If you want a close to stock look, go for Scorpion or Staintune. Most other companies use AL & not SS so it will start corroding & eventually wear out. Staintunes with the spud removed will make the hair on your neck stand at attention when you hear it. The only real downside to Staintune is price. You'd be lucky to get a new one for less than $440 + shipping. You can get a SS Scorpion for like $275. The emblem is glued on, not riveted so you can use a little "Goo Gone" and it will clean up real nice.

Yeah, I like the look and sound of the Staintune, but also want to keep wife off my back (holy s#$% they are expensive!).

I can get a poilished aluminum Micron for less then 300 with free shipping from Parts911. They supposedly sound deepest.

You have me concerned about the aluminum corrosion now....how long? I guess weather/geopgraphy dependant?

I have no interest in Two brothers. Its likely going to be Micron for me.

Thanks, man. You are the one guy who always answers my questions.

If you are ever at no-hope Pope (AFB) for any reason, let's ride. I just rode an incredible road yesterday right down the street from here. I was in heaven for 3.5 hrs.

For aluminium corrosion, it's mostly based on environmental factors. If you ride year round like I do, one speck of road salt will etch the aluminium right before your eyes.

If you're basing the purchase on sound, then Micron gets the win. If you're basing it on quality of the product, Scorpion gets the win. They're the only company I know of that has a muffler replacement warranty if you crash. & they use the ss wool core so they never need repacking.

    $293 & free shipping from:
    http://www.metricbikes-superstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=559&products_id=2379

$275 + shipping from www.starcycle.com I managed to haggle my way to free shipping for all 4 exhausts I've purchased from them.

If I'm ever down that way, I'll contact you. I'm planning on running the entire Skyline/Blue Ridge next year. A little 200 mile detour should be no problem.

I have the Two-Brothers exhaust on my CBR and the caps corroded after about 3 seasons. They just don't shine anymore no matter what I do. The bike is stored indoors and doesn't come out in the winter. The fit-finish and quality of the Scorpion on my friend's bike is great, price is in line too. I like the sound of the Staintune on a VFR though and you will enjoy that long after you forget how much it cost initially....

That's a good point. Thanks. Gonna have to get down on my knees and beg my wife probably. I figure if have I go to Afghanistan and get shot at 8 months out of a year, I deserve to buy what the hell I want when I get back in town, yes? If it makes me happy....

I like the look of the Micron scorched titanium as well. However, there is lots to be said for the understated look of the Staintune.

It is only the sound I am after in the end. Nothing that will wake the neigbors, but one that will cause one to look and say, I'll be damned, I thought for sure that a Mustang GT was coming around the corner!

If you're going for sheer volume, D&D is your answer. I haven't yet heard a louder exhaust on a sportbike. Micron is by far the deepest sound. TBR is kinda raspy & it pops on deceleration. I haven't heard one on a VFR but the M4 on my 1989 Hawk GT sounds awesome. In fact, I think the Hawk sounds better than my VFR. Erion sounds very good but they only use aluminium. On the VFR, I still like Staintune the best. I should have saved my $$$ and got one in the first place. I wanted a carbon fibre so that was the only reason I got Scorpion.

Good news!! I got the go-ahead from wife!!

Bad news...Still cannot decide. Still Micron vs. Staintune.

KC-10FE --- Looking for deep, not loud (I like my neighbors). Most of what I've read over the last week rings true with your last post: Micron is deepest. Nevertheless, there will be the dreaded need to repack....is it really all that hard?

If I go with Micron, I really like the scorched titanium look, unless one of you tell me that scorched titanium is the sign of a true squid....then I am likely to go with chrome over stainless instead. I have not seen too much of that scheme around here. It looks real good in the stock pictures. CF is too popular. Not for me.

AL is out of the hunt now after your previous posts about it.

Never tried to repack anything so I don't know how hard it is. It looks like its a simple operation involving drilling out 3 to 5 rivets, changing the guts & re-installing 3 to 5 rivets. Should be a piece of cake.

Who cares what the rest of us think about YOUR exhaust? If you want the scorched titanium, have at it. Just post some pics.

Well, that's done. I went with Micron. Indysuperbike.com. Chrome over stainless. Pricey, but it will look good and sound great.

    Thanks all for the advice!

I got a high-mount Micron on my 01 VFR. Absolutely love it, I went with the black to red fusion - looks great with my red VFR. Repacking isn't much of an issue, you can get the stuff directly from Micron. I think it is definitely the deepest sound, and if your neighbors get upset, you can just get the spud from Staintune and put it into the Micron. I live in the city, and don't want to wake up everybody in the mornings.

I find that the pipe is deep like Barry White, but not at all loud. I doubt my neighbors even know I installed it.

There is a dude in the neighborhood with a Dodge Ram (its a HEMI!!) with a flowmaster on it. THAT thing rocks the s#$t for 3 blocks every AM as I am leaving for PT. He'll be the one getting all the negative attention, not me!

My I ask for what year of VFR are you making the undertail exhaust for? I have a '96 and am looking at getting a micron Exhaust, but am always open to new ideas.

Sweet!!! I'll definately be looking foward to your write-up. As far as I know, the '94-'97 VFRs has SIMILIAR exhaust as the '98-'02, not identical, but for this, perhaps close enough to be swappable. I do know that you generation of the VFR uses more of a true slip-on type of exhaust cannister, where my generation has a flange mount type cannister. So we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Thanks again!!!
