This is not the first time I had to do this one, but it's not any easier. My dog, well family dog, Rocky, our 12 year old German Shepard has gave up. About a week ago he started getting real weak and is now not able to eat, drink or move. He's been a great one. Maybe the best i ever had. Strong, happy, playfull, loyal & protective. Never guesed that that tiny gray pup would end up the 150 pound fur coated tank he ended up as. I know what has to happin, know I gotta go do it, but it don't make it suck any less.

Its a tough decision, but it has to be made for the dog's sake. We cant be selfish and make our beloved old dogs lay in pain just because we are afraid to let go.

I had a similar situation with my old friend Bo a couple of years ago. He was having trouble seeing and we couldn't get him to eat anything. His usual joyous and playful expression was simply not there anymore - only pain and sorrow. I could hardly bear to look at him. It rained all day the day we put him down, probably the saddest day that I have had up to that point in my life.

Rocky is no longer in pain. Just remember the good times that you have had with him!

    God bless!

Brent and Kris. My personal and respectful condolances.
All of us dog lovers know the realistic span of life for our dogs when we commit to falling into loving friendship with them. But it never seems fair near the end.
I am sorry, but at least good memories were made, and thats all we can do as good freinds to our pets. Have good life experiances and cherish them. Never forget.
I am sorry for your situation. I would be a liar if I said I never shed a tear over the loss of a pet. They arent just pets to me, they are my friends.
I am not even very comfertable sharing my feelings on this, because its just such a sad part of life that we have to go thru, but as your friend I don't want to stay silent either.
    I am sorry guys.
Celebrate the good life that he had rather then spending too much time grieving.
But don't forget to grieve. It's important as well.
    -Chris

Chokes me up - Sorry Brent.

I have a Shepard too at 10yrs old. Best dog ever and absolutely loves kids. We've noticed how he's started to slow down. Well actually, he's more like most of us aging men where he plays like a pup and pays for it later.

Nothing wrong with shedding a tear for man's best friend.

So sorry for your loss. It seems be more painfull than you think it's going to be. I had to put my first dog down, an 11 year old Basset Hound, in Dec. '09. It was one of the toughest decisions I've had to make, but the right one. So is yours.

I'm really sorry to hear of your family's loss. Take solace in the fact that you enabled him to have a wonderful life as he enriched ours. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

I too am sorry for your loss...

We had a Shepherd/husky/wolf hybrid for 19 years... when it got near the end for her, she couldn't walk without leaning against the walls of the house, but the day we lost her was the first time she looked unhappy...

All we can do as men is remember that we loved them and they loved us. cherish the memories, and know that (though it sounds cliche) that dog will greet you on the other side one day, grateful for the life you provided it...

I wanna thank ALL of you. I just finished taking care off all this stuff about 30 minutes ago. The girls are a wreak but I expected that. I'm releived. Now we can rememer him has the oversized puppy playing and running around and not the mess he was this last week. Again, I can't thank you all enough.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. They really become full members of the family. I have a 15 year old pit bull that is hanging in there, but I know I'll be in your shoes before too long.

Stories like this break my heart. I don't care if its a complete stranger; those of us that love dogs for the friends and companions that they are know the pain.

I'm sorry to hear what you and your family had to go through. Remember and cherish all those good times with your buddy. Easier said than done.

I'm glad there is no one in my office to see me right now...

My condolences. All things must pass. My best ever dog pal was a German shepard. We currently have a sweet Sheltie that is almost 18! Besides some teeth issues she is spry. But, at that age the day is not too far away. Hold your doggies, kitties, birds, and squirrels close! Live in the moment.
