Hello again, problem two with this new bike i just bought. It seems the battery is not charging. Is there any past issues on this model related to the charging system on the 1999 VFR? Thanks. Bill

Search on "Regulator Rectifier" and you'll find all the answers you need.

There is also good information and an easy fix to the problem available at Wire My Bike.

    Welcome to the forum.

Thanks about the bike, but I fail to see where my reply was negative in any way, except about the fact that the charging system on this bike was a very poor afterthought. I answered your question and explained how to find more info on your dilema. I would apologize, but see no reason to do so.

If the other replies in this thread offend as well, perhaps you would be happier at VFRD.

Possible problems in order of likelyhood:

    R/R gone bad

bad battery that won't hold a charge

fried wires at plug ( 3 yellow wires) going to R/R or on top of starter relay

    defective stator

Anyone who owns a Honda motorcycle needs to keep a multimeter handy.

He wasn't being a dick. The forum gets plugged up with the same ???'s over and over again. The Reg/Rec issue must be the single biggest topic in the whole forum. in other forums people get right cranky when one starts with a question and not a search. Don't take it personally.

Checked the battery with my volt meter. At idle it just sits around 14 volts. When i give it some Rev's, the voltage starts to go DOWN. Is this the indicator the r/r has gone bad? thanks.

hipo before you solve your electrical problem I think you owe karazy an apology.
He didn't say anything in his reply to you that warrants your negative statement above.
Also, calling someone "dude" is so middle-school. Grow up ~

I back Karazy 100%. We see this issue all of the time, and there are hundreds of threads on it. Do a search before you post and your question may already be answered. We tell the same to all newbs. Welcome and good luck. Oh, and a apology to karazy would be a nice gesture.

Check the posts that mello provided, and search for others. Thanks.

I agree in principle with what was said above although I think the post could have easily made the same point without the use of the "crazy" emoticon. We know nothing about Hipo and for all we know this could be the first forum he/she has ever been a part of. Hipo all I can say is that this is a wonderful forum with lots of very helpful and knowledgable people so please don't let this little incident push you away from these boards. I hope you get this issue sorted quick and start to really enjoy your bike because the VFR is really a great and dependable machine that you can ride for many years to come.

thanks for all the info. all helpful. i travel for work. so when i get home on tuesday, i will hopefully solve the problem. ordered the r/r from wiremybike, so hopefully this does the trick. from everyones input, this seems like the issue. like i said, i travel for work, extra time is not very common for me. so searching for the problem is extra work, why not just leave a post and hope for the best. for the most part it worked. thanks again. hipo_p51 (Bill)

I think this thread got out of control when VfourBear posted his opinion on the matter... everybody knows that Bear is full of hot air and doesn't know a thing about cars
