Hey guys. 2002 VFR. Just noticed today that my bike will only start in Neutral. If I try to start it in gear with the clutch in it will not start. This is with the stand up or down. If I try to start it in neutral I can do it with the clutch in or out it does not matter. Any ideas?

NM - Found the issue. It was a loose connector on the clutch. Pulled it off and back on and now starts in gear with the stand up.

Bravnik, I have the same problem. The problem started when I had my alarm replaced. Where was the loose connector?

He's probably talking about the clutch switch located on the left handlebar. It determines if the clutch is engaged.

Strangely the latest Honda's are made that way ! I was on a race school 600 & stalled it the first time I wen to pull away due to lack of torque/revs on my part. Sitting there clutch in blooming thing would not start then the instructor says it will only work in neutral ! :( Crazy, try that at a light if the bike was stalled for any reason.

Strangley..that happened to me when I bought my bike 4 years ago. I was told I think by Stosh..that put in gear (2 or 3) and with the clutch in role bike back and forth... If I remember correctly..the clutch plates were sticking together. It worked for awhile but it only lasted a month or so. As soon as I get outside I definitely will check out that wire. thanks for the heads up guys.

You want to talk about wierd, my old 08 gsxr750 would not start even in neutral unless you pull the clutch lever all the way in.

hey guys I'm new to this forum and to VFR's in general. My bike wont start at all even when in neutral, and the clutch fully pulled, could this be the issue or could it be something else?

Welcome to the forum... To get the best help, you should probably start a new thread and include which motorcycle you have, along with the symptoms.

Hi and Welcome to the MadHouse :welcome:

When you get time please head over to the Introductions part of the forum and say hi to the rest of VFRWorld - tell us a bit about you and your bike and don't forget to include at least one photo of your VFR or folks will be raggin on you very soon.

    :focus:

To help us help you, can you update your forum profile ("My Profile" link at the very top of the page) to include the specs of your VFR and a rough location city/state. That way you might find someone nearby is willing to swing by and help especially if you have a well stocked beer fridge.:drink:

It can be frustrating when your bike picks up a problem, but from your short description there are so many possibilities, we really need a lot more information from you if we are going to be able to offer any sensible advise. So please tell us..

What sort of VFR are we talking about! Was the bike running fine previously - or is this a barn find which has not run in years? - you know this stuff - we don't.

If the bike was running fine, did problems occur suddenly or progressively? Tell us what you see (and hear) when you try to start the bike. Are the instruments lighting up normally? Any warnings? Headlights bright, dim or dead? If its an FI VFR can you hear the fuel pump prime? You have checked the basics - out of fuel? Kill switch?

Oh and yes - if the clutch switch is playing up it can prevent a bike starting - but there are so many other more likely things which need to be ruled out first.
