Not a VF, but posting here cause it's where I hang out/post, and where we bash people for getting free bikes :)

Well at least it's not in boxes. And yes it was posted for FREE on Craigslist here in Montreal. When I saw the ad (no pic or anything in the ad, just "Free 82 Nighthawk") I called the guy and told him I'd give him 25 bucks no matter what it looked like. I wasn't expecting this:

Awesome dude! Give us the rest of the details. Did he say why he was giving it away and what have you found out about it so far?

He had owned it for quite a while, he did some mods (new paint job, 4-into-1 aftermarket pipe) and kept up the maintenance cause he was using it. 4 years ago (the last time it was registered for the road) he winterized it, parked and covered it in his dad's garage for storage as usual, then in the Spring he bought himself a new bike (coincidentally, he told me it's a VFR800 ABS). After that I guess his priority was the VFR and he never bothered to register or use the old bike.

Not sure why he decided to give it away, but he seemed like he had money, and maybe it was just more hassle to try and sell a bike than it was worth to him. Maybe the 1000-1200 bucks or so he could have got wasn't worth his time meeting people over where it was stored (his parent's house, not his), and dealing with people asking a million questions, expecting test rides, worrying about safety inspections (after 12 months unregisted in Quebec it will have to re-pass safety, which is notoriously nit-picky), etc.

Since he had no pics in the CL ad I half expected it to be a crumbling wreck and thought I might just sell it for parts, but after I pulled the cover off it (yeah I got the cover too) I knew it was complete and I'd keep it and get it running. I'll clean the tank and carbs and change all the fluids and plugs and put a battery in it and see if it runs when I get a free day with good weather.

And yeah as hard as it is to believe he really was giving it away. If he was selling it I never would have responded to him. I have NO MONEY and all my spare time/money is going towards a Glastron Jet Boat project that I'm trying to finish before I spend anything on anything else!! All I've been able to do so far is wash 4 years of dust off of it in the back of my truck.

Oh yeah, I also gotta say that in addition to the First Gen VF500, an early Nighthhawk was always on my Wanna Have One list. Now all I need is an early V-Max and I won't need any more bikes!
