Does any one use soft luggage that rests on thier exhaust? I'm wondering if the heat shields block enough heat so my bags won't melt down.

Wondering the same thing. My bike has dual carbon fiber micron exhaust, so they don't get real hot but was still wondering about mounting my soft luggage. In fact it seem akward to get the straps under the tail with the exhaust there. Any experienced folks want to comment?

    No melt down

Well, since no one replied, I said #*%^ it and did it, the grab handles held most of the bag off the heat shields though a little did touch. I did over 500 miles with no problem, no burning smells and no obviouse damage.

    Waiting Waiting

    Thanks Better,

I have been waiting to see if you get a reply as I am planning a big trip approx. 1,800km to Phillip Island in February 07 for the round of the Auz Superbikes and need to get a set of soft bags. Can you tell me what brand you use and how have you found them for quality and storage etc. and have you used a magnetic tank bag? I've been told they have a tendancy to scratch the tank eventually where the magnets attach. Is this true?

I borrowed a set from a friend when I had my CBR which had a Yosh pipe on it. Went on a long trip and bag on that side got warm but didn't melt. My friend then went on a trip (his bike had stock pipes) and it melted the plastic in the bags.

You shouldn't have as much heat with an aftermarket pipe because they are not as restrictive as a stocker, allowing the exhaust to go through without the heat retention.

I have a magnetic tank bag too. I found that the magnets don't scratch the tank. However, the bag has some kind of clip-on retainer (hard to explain) at the front of the bag that did scratch the tank. I cut it off and no more scratches, and i was able to buff them out.

I borrowed a set of Fieldsheer for a trip from Las Vegas to San Diego and back. They were laying on teh sides of the stock heat shields the whole time and there was no damage. Don't know about aftermarket pipes though.

I had a feildsheer magnetic tank bag too, but it was on blue tape. The friend that lent me his bags advised me to use painters blue tape everywhere the bags may rub. It didn't seem like I needed it under the tank bag. I'm really glad I had it under the saddle bags becuase there was obviouse rubbing where I had bungees wrapped from the passenger foot pegs across my bedroll and down the other side.
