Need help with oil because im an idiot pics of bike included

    So after a long winter of just staring at my new to me 2008 Honda interceptor sitting in the garage after I purchased her I was able to unwinterize her two weekends ago. I changed the oil cleaned and adjusted the chain and cleaned her up. I have been fortunate enough to ride her for the last two weeks and everything has been perfect. For the last two years I've been riding an 85 VF500 and my new ride is such an awesome upgrade from that.

    Anyways, two of my friends came by to work on their bikes, one owns my previous vf500 the other owns a Triumph thunderbird sport which you may be able to see in the pics provided, and as they were working on their bikes I was flipping through my manual. I came accross the oil section and noticed that it requires oil that is rated API SG or higher except oils that labeled as energy conserving. The manual also states not to use an API SH or higher rating because this may ADVERSLY affect clutch operation.

    This is a big problem because I put in mobile 1 with a rating of API SM and IS labeled energy conserving. Again, Ive been riding he bike for two weeks and haven't noticed any problems at all but don't want too damage my new bike by not following the recommended oil ratings. I also put mobile 1 in because of many recommendations found on this site but not sure if purchased the right oil for motorcycles. Any help with this would be graet and pics of my bike are bellow. Probablly just going to change the oil again to be on the safe side just want to know if I should be concerned or not.

    The only adverse affect you'll see is reduced clutch life over the long run. Many magazines & such have stated you will be OK running car oil but not ideal. If you really stop & think about it, moto oil does not cost THAT MUCH more than car oil so it makes good sense to run moto oil. One oil change will probably not do any damage. If you're really concerned about it, drain & refill with proper oil. Any number of companies make moto oil that will suffice for a VFR. Honda recommended normal Pro Honda GN4 in just about every bike they make. They also make a semi-syn & full syn. Whatever you do, DO NOT use an oil that says MOLY on it. This will ruin your clutch & I found that out first hand with the Hawk GT I used to own. It had only 9000 on it & it had very noticeable clutch slippage. I switched to GN4 & it still slipped. I forked over the $125 for a new Barnette clutch & Shell Rotella T Synthetic & the problem dissappeared instantly.

    I run Shell Rotella T synthetic in both VFR's I own. I switched to this after reading some info here on VFRWorld. I called Blackstone Labratory & they said there are no adverse affects running diesel truck oil in a bike. In fact, they said it will will outperform almost any oil you can name. If you like, give them a call @ 260-744-2380. Rotella T is an oil designed for huge diesel truck engines. If it will work in a Kenworth with a 625 Cat for 100000 miles, it surely will work in a bike that usually will only go between 2000-4000 between oil changes.

    Just to note that the Rotella T Synthetic is also JASO-MA certified.... All is good for use in the bike. It's good stuff.

    Rotella-T is the only lube i use for high-end units.

    ive had older/smaller bikes that were fine on pretty much any kind of dino laying around.

    I use Rotella-T as well. You can get it at just about any Wal-Mart.

    Rotella 15w-40 conv. using it for years. Use Rotella 5w-40 synth for the car

    Hello, I'm using Valvoline SAE 10w40 mineral oil and no problems at all, the reference indicates JASO MA. API SF/SG/SJ, the manual do not indicate to use synthetic oil, .
    I've read many articles about motorcycle oils and the recommend to use mineral oil and specifically API SF/SG and SH because japanese motorcycles uses one oil to lubricate engine mobile parts,transmissiona and wet clutch, there are good quality synthetic oils but they are aditioned with anti friction components that will affect the clutch and reduce it`s service life and will make it to slip affecting the engine performance.
    And read that an oil with more of 6000 km shows a lot of gasoline rests and may have metal and friction (from the cluth discs) son I'ts importamt to change it although Honda recommends the oil change at 12000km)

    If you want to use Mobile 1 they do sell a motorcycle specific oil that is synthetic. I buy it at my local triumph dealer. because they recommend it for their 955I engines. wilburj

    Not all synthetics have friction modifiers. Mineral or synthetic, just look for "JASO MA".
