This is really a stupid question but I cannot get the mufflers off my VF500F. I have tried, on both sides. I removed the rear mounting bolt and released the exhaust clamp all the way by removing both bolts. The muffler will turn and it has plenty of free movement up and down. It acts lose but will not budge when I try to pull it off. Am I missing something? I hate to take a hammer to it if it is not necessary. My mufflers are pretty scratched up and the overall look of the bike would benefit greatly from a couple of eBay items.

You are on the right track - you have to wrest the mufflers off.

I had a blocked rear muffler case few years ago with my VF500. I had to heat the pipes up to almost red state and then they just slipped off
