My first: 97 Honda Shadow VLX Deluxe

    Favorite: My 04 VFR

Most reliable: Both were equally reliable. I've never had a single problem with them out on the road that left me stranded. Note: Leaving the ignition on is MY fault, not the bikes. A dead battery does not constitute as unreliable when caused by the stupidity of the driver.

The first – 1973 Yamaha 175 enduro – VFR World – “When did it grab you”

Most favorite - of my early 20’s years, the Honda Nighthawk– Because it was dubbed by co-workers “The Beaver Mag bike” – a couple of my co-workers saw me many times with different “babes” on the back. I didn’t bother to tell them some were my sisters, some were my sister’s friends. It was just too good to shatter the bikes image.

How did I purchase my most reliable bike? - My 06 VFR, it was a left over. Friday we sealed the deal and the dealer asked if I could return Saturday afternoon to let them do the necessary preparation work on the VFR. A day later I went to dealer to pick-up the bike. The sun glistening off the pearl glitters was impressive. There it was. I waited years nursing my old bike along until I could make one payment for that new VFR. The salesman reviewed the paperwork but the manual was missing. I happened to check under the seat for the wayward manual and discovered the battery hold down was not attached. Furthermore the incorrect battery (undersized) was installed, the plastic terminal cover was torn and no rear hand grips were installed and no tool pouch. Looking surprised the salesman went inside and….Honda service was summoned.

A young mechanic shuffled/strolled to the parking lot and exhibited the classic look and actions of the “ah yea like whatever dude generation” has created; he was the poster boy. I was not sure if he was a Honda mechanic or an escaped exhibit from the local side show. His neck and face so stretched from gauges, pins, bolts, he could have had a Helibar kit in there in there and I just missed it. He spoke. Seconds into our conversation, my mind was drifting, wandering……this kid was buying his ink in bulk because he successfully covered areas of his head, neck, ears and tongue I thought were unattainable. Suddenly my eyes drew shut; the reflecting sun rays off visibly displayed devices above the shirt line were too much. I was able to refocus after donning my shatter resistant polycarbonate lenses, for if one of those bolts let loose from his forehead, I didn’t want to lose an eye before I was able to enjoy my new VFR. My vision cleared, yet still unable to focus on how to properly attune my anger from the lack of prep work to the bike, I stood silent. His incoherent ramblings reminded me of a Barney Frank or Nancy Pelosi speech, scary I tell you, downright frightening. The zenith of this rambling explanation was fast approaching, I could feel it, and he let loose a verbal discharge, similar to a thin watery feces explosion on a Saturday morning about 5am. His command of the English language was on par with Keith Richards during a mild heroin bender. My shear amazement drew my mind straight, when he attempted to explain why the VFR no longer comes standard with the rear hand grips or a tool kit. Still. I was Silent. Thinking Nurse Ratchet had let one get away and knowing McMurphy didn’t make it, Cheswick and Billy had to be close by…. I had to do something.

I had to ask for the manager; the mechanic called the manager via two-way phone and then slowly lurched sideward in an effort to reach his trousers that were doing battle with gravity as well as slowly wipe away the thin gooey substance dripping and splattering onto his phone yet still filling the multitudes of his perforated oral cavity.

They sent the grips and tool kit to my home and put a new battery in and I never returned.

I just could not take it.

It’s by far the most reliable enjoyable bike so far.

    First: 1995 Ducati SS/SP

Favorite: 1995 Ducati SS/SP - While I really, really like the VFR, I loved the Duc! It's like having kids. While you love them all equally, you still have a favorite!

Reliable: Tie between 2007 VFR (RWB) & 1995 Ducati SS/SP (not one problem in 5 years & 10k miles...) - As the years (and miles) go by, the VFR will probably win out...
