Valve Noise

    My 6th gen Vfr800 will start up normally. As soon as i blip the throttle it starts making valve noise untill the engine heats up to about 85*c then it stops. Bike has about 32000km on it. Is it time i take it in for some valve maintenance?

    If the noise comes and goes very abruptly and is quite noisy (as in rattle type noise), you may want to try replacing the cam chain tensioners.

    Thanks i will certainly keep that in mind... im not very mechanically inclined so i will have to take it in to the dealership.

    are the cam chain tensioners an issue with the gen 6? I have a noise on mine also that sounds simmilar to this. Mine is more of a clunking noise from low in the engine and is most noticable between 150-180 degrees. It is only present at idle and goes away when reved or the cluth is pulled in. I was going to pull the clutch and look for the issue there but you may have presented the real fix. Why didn't they just stick with the gears, they had a distinctive (cool) sound and don't need tensioners!:smile:

    cooper, that clutch noise is normal on the 6th gen. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

    Webbfast, I can tell you this. I repaired a customer's Vtec with similar symptoms a couple years ago, with similar time on it.

    I actually noticed the noise when the bike was in for other maintainance. Best described as a rattle, most noticable at idle. Came and went very abruptly sometimes with a 'bliip' of the throttle. Customer said sometimes the noise would be there at a stoplight, sometimes not.

    The successful fix was to replace the cam chain tensioners. They are automatic, meant to take up slack and 'lock' in that positiion. What causes the noise is they 'back off', which they're not supposed to do. Then the cam chain is loose. They usually tension themselves again, back off, etc.

    If you can figure out which of the two is failing, you could only replace that one. I'd recommend just doing both. Not a difficult repair...I'd say an hour or two labor would be enough.
