Welcome to the world of owning a VF500! I bought one a year ago, and honestly I've not had everything right on it yet, but I love the way that V-4 runs! I bought it as a basket-case. Mine didn't run, the carbs were gunked up, engine had been changed and not completed. I (thinkfully) also got the original engine with it. I got the carbs cleaned, and the bike running, then I think having them so far out of sync may have caused the #4 rod bearing to hammer out and spin. Using parts from the original engine, I got it running again, got the carbs synced, and put a decent amount of miles on it.

This all brings the story current. Now i have it apart for a bad timing chain tensioner, which progressed to swapping out a valve in the front head, finding out the rear cams were out of time by a tooth, finding a bad valve tip in the rear head, now it's waiting for me to drop the engine out and fix the rear head, time the cams properly, put it all back together and run the crap out of it from there!

All said and done, Ihave about $700 in the bike, it had new tires on it when I got it, and needs little more then paint work, after the engine is back together again.

I don't advise putting anyone on ignore, even the squirrelly dude. He tosses out a nugget of good info once in a while that is priceless!

Welcome. I've got one myself that I think is the schiz-nit. I've got 3 other rides, but I'm finding I'm spending the most time on the 500. Lots of fun to ride. Lots of good info here as well.

Hi skidoman. I know the bike you bought. I just bought one too with a spare motor and lots of other parts. Perhaps we can help each other out. I sent you a PM.

I think everyone is getting 'squirrely' about 'em and selling them off.

    c'mon... had to.

    wait for it... anytime now...

p.s. Thanks for the VTR float bowl gaskets... y'know who you are ;)

    Cheers... Mike.

I agree!! I would not ignore squirrel man if I was you... He might have his own strong opinion about these bikes, but he knows alot of stuff about all bikes. I just recently posted several threads and in both he gave some pretty priceless information about my bike!!
My opinion, take all the help you can get and if you really like your vf500 like I do, stick with it and ignore the comments against it... These are unique bikes that stand out in a crowd!! They may take alittle more work than others, but thats what makes them unique, if it were easy everyone would have one!!
To me it is well worth the time/money to own a one of a kind bike like these!!!

good luck with the bike!! If you have any questions feel free to ask away, there is always someone on here that can answer them!!!
