I am curious to those who know about such things as to why the VFR gets such poor fuel economy? Before we get into riding styles causing a big variance, lets be straight. I have friends with Liter+ bikes with 70+ lbs torque that get 10+ miles per gallon better than my VFR. Why is the VFR so wasteful?

I've yet to get more than 75 miles on my new viffer so I know nothing about it milage, my 919 however would only muster 30mpg. So if it's better than that I'm happy as a pig in mud!

With the exception of mechanical issues, I've ridden the piss out of my 6th gen and never gotten less than 36mpg. Riding under normal conditions I average 42mpg. What kind of MPG are you seeing on your 2007 Starr?

What do you call bad? My 1994 VFR gets an average of 42mpg so I have a range of 227miles which is much better than the new 2010 VFR's (167 miles). If I try, at best I can get 50mpg and that makes my range a blader busting 270miles. I am good with these numbes. JIM

Well, I only have 550 miles on her and I have filled up three times I think. The best has been 38.8 and the worst has been 35.1. I have friends with Liter+ sport tours that regularly get 48-50 MPG, with a much bigger and heavier bike.

MPG Conversation is like the K&N, or Synthetic vs. conventional oil debate. If your not happy with the mileage your getting, slow it down a bit. I don't know you or am not implying anything just going to ask a couple questions here.

    1. Your picture shows your bike with the hard bags on it. Do you leave them on all the time?

    2. Again not implying anything as I don't know you, but how big you are will effect the MPG also. So if you are a plus size, you will see less MPG than others.

Can you specify what liter+ sport tourers you are referring to? From what I have read so far the VFR is more sport than tourer.

i am an ignorant newbie, but interested, cuz i just bought a 2007 (have 30 miles on it, LoL), but could it be getting a bit lower mileage because it is in the "break-in period"....? Just a thought.

Well I have a friend that gets better milage than me with his 2009 BMW 1200RT and it has a power commander on it, which hurts his gas mileage:) I have another friend who has some type of Yamaha Sport Tour bike that they don't even make anymore. Its a pretty unique bike at it is 1000cc 77 lb tourque bike and he got 49 mpg this last fill up.

Your size isn't much of a factor here, but the hard cases will kill your mileage. These are not the most powerful motors, so they will need to work a little harder to do the same job as a 1000 or larger.... especially with them cases hanging out the sides.

I am not complaining so much as curious. It is getting the gas milage that Honda rated it for and I bought it knowing that. I am just curious as to the technical aspects of the bike that make it a little less fuel efficient than a bike of roughly only 800 ccs should be. The BMW 800 ST gets better, but it is lighter and leaner which makes sense. I don't understand the bigger bikes getting better:)

My mileage seems low (34 mpg last several tanks, with a best of 38 mpg)compared to others who have posted. I do have Corbin Beetle Bags on my bike, and a tank bag. I am heavy on the throttle at each stop, too. I love to leave my brother on his V-Strom 1000 in the dust trying to catch up to me. It really pisses him off and gets him muttering under his breath (what are brothers for?). My next trip on the slab (which may not be until Mid-Ohio in July), I'll see what mileage I can get by being gentle at blast offs.

Bah - its just gas mileage. Who cares! I think I get 38 on a good day. Never seen 40. usually around 35.

As a wise man once said, I'm more concerned about how much rubber is left on my tires.

Oh my buddies exclusive bike is a Yamaha GTS1000 which was only sold in the US in 93 and 94. There were only about 800 of them sold here. That is why he said he will never sell his. Really unique front suspension on this thing. Getting 49 MPG is pretty cool too:)

So true. I never even gave my mileage a thought until I started reading about it here at VFRW. I just don't really care, unless it's an indication of an engine problem.

The bike weighs about 560 pounds wet without luggage (or over 20% heavier than a modern liter bike), and the engine doesn't produce much torque in the lower RPM range. It takes a lot more throttle and/or RPM to produce the equivalent acceleration.

I figure mine weighs in at about 600-610 pounds with luggage. I average about 42MPG at 75-80MPH on a couple of hundred highway miles if I just cruise. Lower the speed to about 60-65 in top gear, and I saw 50MPG once. As a direct comparison, the same trip on a mildly modified SV650 standard with the same luggage load and riding styles nets about 48MPG at the higher speed, and 55MPG at the lower speed. The SV is about 120 pounds lighter, less aerodynamic, and runs too rich through the Sierras (about 90 miles out of a 250 mile trip).

The worst I've seen is 32MPG on twisty roads using a lot of throttle and shifting a bunch, without being a complete lunatic; just "sporty" within my limited abilities. So it comes down to weight and throttle control, in my limited view of the universe.

I get 37 on my 92 (carbureted) and 43 on my injected Ducati - me thinks 555lbs wet vs 426lbs has something to do with that
