Please don't kill an old bike if all it needs is new carbs. Although with these bikes the carbs are the most important item, it still is only one part of the whole. IMOP

I am going to have to do the same thing to my CBR 954. She's going through a LOT of oil, yet runs strong.

I'll swap you a good set of carbs for yours if you keep it on the road. Get it apart and find the problem with the bore before you stick a fork in it. I do have a gang of parts and a parts engine you are welcome to as well.

OK, I got into her, and was nervous has what I was going to find. Well I've got pictures, not to clear, but you gear-heads can see the problem. The 60 psi hole was scared and pitted, looked like the bike sat around for a long time and started pitting maybe rust?? I gaped the ring and they were sloppy. The head was ok but the surface was some what rough, I fixed that problem. I ordered new rings, gaskets, head bolts and the copper gasket for the exhaust.Pics 1&3 are before and others are after honing.

Cylinders need a surface refresh honing if new rings are refitted to get new rings to seal properly.....and any visible scar in cylinder walls is a no-no. Service manual lists largest acceptable cylinder diameter for stock pistons.

Rust ring and cylinder corrosion suggest entrance of H2O....bad headgasket you had.

You can get free EXPERT advice at any busy automotive machine shop: it's one of their strongest skills, making sure cylinders are good. Take your block around for their evaluation and analysis, even if you don't follow their recommendations.

I did them today, I think they call it cross hatching, if I'm not mistaking.

    Right !!........

Cross-hatching would be considered a surface treatment, while honing slightly opens up cylinder and gets brand NEW surface.

I honed them to get the flaws out, and with the in and out motion created cross hatching. It's so the new rings don't wear into the old grove or scaring from old ring. Not doing this would defeat the purpose.

Did the bore surface clean up? Kinda hard to tell from the picks if it is ok or not. I had an engine that got water in it a few years back that had qite a bit of corrosion in it but to my suprise cleaned up to perfection .Hope that is the case here.If not L.A. sleeve offered a sleeve for these some years back and they will fab most anything at no extra charge in most cases......the machine work to the cases is another matter.

I hate to open this can of worms.......Fredsncoma has a set of Cosworth pistons and rings for a gen 2 and head gaskets as well, may want to see what he will part with his loot for even if you just need the head gaskets , as they are pricey......he may even have a complete gasket set as well. He also has a sweet ass set of ported and polished heads with over size valves , but they need a new set of valves cut for them.He is an old friend and a very good guy so do not hesitate to pm him and insult his mother when asking about parts. She is hot as hell!:xxx:

I've got all parts for the engine except the head bolts. I don't see anything wrong with old ones, but I was told that if the bolts have been torqued more then once or twice, (not knowing how many time this bike has been apart) they might be stretched.... What do you guys say? I like to start putting back together this weekend. The bolts are on back order, suppose to get them 03/16/10 all the way from Japan. And I was told they might be obsolete, if that's the case, I asked the dealer what I should do then. He said I would have to use the old ones or find used ones in junk yard. That funny when I think about it that you wouldn't know how many times a junkyard bolt has been torqued. Can you guys give me assurance that the old ones are find.
