So I took her out Tuesday for a quick spin just to see what the new bike was like .I found her very comfy compared the the R1,but not nearly as powerfull(suprise).
What was truly great was the clutchless shifting,I've never felt anything smoother on a stock bike .I was planning a quick shifter but now I feel there is no need
Do you all use the clutch on upshifts ? and is it as smooth(clutchless) ? ...........

    Ken.

I can upshift and downshift my 6th gen clutchless. I don't do it all the time as I'm usually tachin' her up and I don't wanna bang gears under heavy acceleration. So yes, it can be done once you get used to the bike and match rev's, it's not as "smooth" but it's not really what I'd qualify as violent either. It's also kinda hard on the synch's due to the extra shock load with out being fully engaged for that fraction of a second. Clutchless upshifting is (obviously) much easier than downshifting. Hope that answers your query

I was on my 2ND ride of this year yesterday, riding my 5th gen, on which I now have approx 200 miles, and everytime I went to preload the shifter (a must on my ZRX1200) it would just shift to the next gear. I don't think anything shifts as nicely as a Honda. As smooth as it is, I can't think it does any damage. I clutchless upshift my Kawi too, you just need to preload the shifter to ensure smoothness. I can even go clutchless on my 1970 Moto Guzzi, but you really have to take your time!! When you get it right on the Guzzi a wide smile will appear on your face, and you'll know all is right with the world. Something about riding that old twin that's deeply spiritual for me. No bike I've ever owned feels so good going so slow!

Flynn, Is that your sister riding back of you in your avatar? She is hot. She shifts my gears...and revs my engine,,, VROOM....VROOM... But by the look on your face, it could be your wife. I can just hear it: "Randy...you tinkled on the toilet seat again didn't you?"

Actually, I know the clutchless shifting has been well discussed for up shifting but I am not really convinced it is wise to down shift without the clutch.

And Pony. The Carphal Tunnel runs between ad Qinton hut in Canada and a farm house in the USA. Your feds found it along with some green leafy plantlike material.

The R1 has a quick shifter (DynoJet)
Talk about quck and satisfyibg..................It is a other worldly experience.
It is just as good with the 6th Gen.only with backing off the throttle.

Can you? yes; should you? no !

Clutch helps to smooth power delivery, takes shock load off gears, chain.

Clutchless certainly not good in rain or low traction.

Occasionally on long rides I'll do a clutchless shift when I'm relaxing my clutch hand but not all the time. The brakes and clutch on the VFR are buttery smooth compared to the GSX-R, I love riding them back to back to compare and appreciate the differences of the two.

Mechanically, there is nothing wrong with doing it if everything goes right. The problem is that you only have to mess up one time to start a chain of events that will just get worse. The probability might be low but the possibility is there.

I up shift without the clutch quite a bit at the track and when I'm really getting on it.....No problems. While your accelarating pre-load the gear shift lever, when you reach your desired shift point let off the throttle for a millisecond and then get back on it. It will shift as soon as you blip the throttle....Just as fast as any quick shifter.. Good or bad is a matter of opinion. I personally have not heard of any failures on the VFR with clutchless upshifting.

I upshift quite frequently without the clutch, especially in gears 3-6. Most of my driving on the VFR is commuting so I'm not at high RPM (below VTEC engagement) and the upshift is almost always silky smooth. Downshifting is just the opposite. Since most of my riding is commuting and at lower RPM, the downshift is rather rough. When up in the RPMs the downshift is smoother but I'm usually not there. When I'm out playing and riding somewhat hard I almost always use the clutch.
