Is it a supplement to another manual? They did not change the bikes much from gen 2 to gen 4, maybe it is calling for info from an earlier manual.Kawasaki does that over several models.

I don't know. I just know that in many places it refers to "See section X of the common service manual". Like, say for checking the oil on the dipstick, for example or changing the oil...

I was thinking that maybe Honda issued a general service manual for several bikes and you bought the bike specific manual. Like maybe they are a set. Mine doesn't do that, though. I have a friend that trained as a Honda certified mechanic and I could ask him next time I think of it and see if he has a clue about that one. I know at his shop he had a stack of manuals each model year, but I just figured they printed service info out in each edition. Did you search eBay for Common Honda Service Manual just to check?

The "general" manual is most likely the owners manual which comes stock with the motorcycle. You have the service manual which is a little more in-depth when it comes to doing repairs and diagnostics. You can download the general manual for a 4th gen here: http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=quick_search&search_sort_by=date&search_sort_order=desc&search_term=manual&search_filter_app[downloads]=1

hope this helps, if you dont find it from the link above try doing a search on in google, it should be there.

Really? They call that little small 15 page thing under the seat with the toolkit the "common service manual"? Wow. I'll have to dig that thing out and see. Will report back.

Just checked under the seat. You guys are correct. The little manual must be the one the service manual refers to. Go have a frosty adult beverage on me!

The bike specific manual pertains to maintenance on a certain bike model, whereas the general service manual covers common maintenance for all Honda motorcycles. This allowed them to print it once and kept the other service manuals smaller. I'll post the link after I get a chance to hunt it down.

The users manual is certainly a good guide for routine maintenance and should be connected to all vehicles by a very strong bungee cord.
As promised, not the best copy, but it works. http://downloads.hondatech.info/Moto/Common/Honda_Common_Service_Manual.pdf

What he^ said. It's a totally separate manual having general guidelines and maintenance procedures such as changing oil, general checks, etc.,etc. I'm not sure if they still make it.
