An '02 that is eight years old with 9500 miles=$4900. Brand new overstock '07 with 0 miles, earlier VTEC engagement, and no harness issues=$6800. Personally, the extras that are being offered with the '02 aren't worth much at all. If you can come up with the extra $1900 you may want to consider one of the heavily rebated 2007's. In terms of VTEC, you may very well love it right out of the box. If you don't, there are a number of mods that can be made to ease the transition. If mods aren't your thing than simple RPM management in conjunction with a minimal amount of competent throttle use makes the VTEC very easy to use, even while cornering.

I sure do love my 6th Gen. Just got back from a high speed blast to Death Valley this past weekend. Got sun, wind and hellacious rain. The bike performed perfectly.

where are you? I live in atascadero and ride a 5th gen. tori lives in Grover Beach and rides a 6th gen. SLOVFR is also there in grover on a 4th gen. You could get a look and hear of all three gens and some seat time on at least my 5th gen if you want to see what you think about each... I haven't seen any really good ones for sale here close in a bit, though... just some junk ones... Be sure to report in for SLO 2010 up here at my place in May...

Ive owned the 04 and currently ride the 06 vfr and if you like the styling of the 5th gen and the 6th gen about the same, I would go with the 5th gen with the gear driven cams. I think the 5th gen gets better mpg and you don't have to deal with the V-tech issue. The 6th gen has a flat spot at the 4500rpm mark, it also has a slight on/off throttle response at lower rpm's, and it will be costly to get the valves adj. and you might not like the v-tech after sometime. For me the v-tech engagement isn't a deal breaker but I is unnerving when going into corners. I know theres people out there that say there vfr800 runs perfect with no issues but Ive had two now and the ( 2004 vfr was brand new) issues I mentioned above have been on both bikes. Getting a power commander will help alot with all these issues but that's more money you will have to be spending. Go with the 5th gen.

When you go for a test ride make sure you ride her on all possible rode types. Twisty, straight, city, highway. And use the v-tech several times just to make sure you like it. Don't get in any hurry to buy, the 7th gen is about to release and I think there are going to be some really good deals out there this summer on past generations.

I forgot to mention on the 5th vs 6th thing: 1) As many have already stated either is a great choice. 2) The valve adjustments are more costly (or time consuming if you do it) on the 6th. 3) There is more aftermarket parts availability for the 6th gen and many more color options. 4) Looks are subjective so completely up to you. 5) Fifth gen is rarer (might be a plus or minus for you) Also, if you find a great deal on the 3rd or 4th gen, I wouldn't leave them out unless you really want FI and LBS... 6)ABS is only available on the 6th gen and 7th gen. 7) Supercharger is only available for the 5th gen AFAIK (from Toro).

I have heard that the 6th gen handles better from some, but you can't prove it by me. They are so damn similar to me that I think it'd take some track time on both to really be able to determine that. Plus, it might be unfair of me to judge anymore since my suspension isn't stock anymore. I think if you compare a low mile 5th gen and low mile 6th gen, they will be very similar unless say you get a 10000 mile bike that someone uh...larger has ridden hard vs a 10000 mile bike that someone uh...daintier has ridden easily...

    Just some thoughts... YMMV
