OK, the old 2v bevel drives have gear driven cams, the more modern 4v desmos use a belt to drive the cams but in both cases the valves are mechanically actuated because there are no valve springs. They use a rocker to both open and close the valve. Isn't that what I said to begin with?

Gotta say I'd like to have this problem, as most of these models found for sale are in less than "good" shape. I've been scouring the ads for a 86' 750 bike or engine, as this is my idea of mecca, so I'd have to go with that one. I would try to beat him on the price though. As stated there are no cam issues but as I've done to one of my 87s I'd change the front end as well as an f2 rear. Is the 86 completely stock? The sound of the 2nd gen is what made me fall in love with these bikes

oh , my bad. I thought the cams actuated the rockers which then opens/ closes the valve? What then spins the cams?

IN a bevel drive, the crankshaft spins the cams via the bevel drive system in the lower picture. In a rubberband the cams are spun by a belt connected to the crank. Your comment inferred that only belts are desmos.

Well, I think I'm going to pass on both. The '92 seemed abused and the '86 is questionable for the price. The jacked up ignition worries me, so back in the hunt. I really do like the looks of the older ones...
    thanks

Gotch'ya. At the time I hadn't even thought about the old bevel drives. I think we were on the same page tho.

Nice looking bike but,I just got one exactly like it about that cherry for $300 bucks out of some guys garage so $2600 seems steep. if it were a 86 750 I might change my mind but not for an 87 700.

bike looks real good, all stock and the white ones are somewhat rare. I'm assuming the shipping is at least $600. Looks good for $2000

is it a private sale or dealer? Was 2200 the asking price?

It's a private sale. The asking price was/is $2600 but he went down to $2200. I found another shipper that will bring it down to me for $200, so $2400 for the bike. Here is the sellers description:
1987 Honda VFR 700. V-4 The original Superbike. 26k miles, original plastics, never down. These bikes are extremely rare to find in this condition, and even more desireable in the pearl white color. The bike has been completely gone through by a mechanic. All seals, o-rings, fluids etc have been replaced. It runs like new and can be a daily rider. This bike is a living piece of art. The styling is timeless and it draws attention from all bike enthusiasts

New tires. Removeable rear seat cowling. It looks even better in person.
