I was looking at a used 91 VFR with 44K miles. Seems to be in good condition, original owner. Just wondering (and I know it depends on abuse level) how many miles before, on average, I'm looking at a new motor?

I'd REALLY love to add it to my garage. I'd probably tear it apart completely and give the bike a once over. But don't want to bite off more than I can chew for a bike project and end up with a bike near death or a money pit.

    Any insight appreciated.

44K Miles isn't that much for a VFR, people have gotten them up to 100K. That being said, what's a real money and time pit is the fairings. Being such an "old" bike they can be really expensive as well as hard to find. What I would do is look at the plastics and see if there's any damage.

The engine is solid and reliable and if the oil/filter were changed regularly the engine should be fine for many more miles. You may want to have the valve clearances and R/R checked but other than that I think she has plenty of life left in her. My old 93 had 41k miles and ran fine until it was wrecked. Luckily I was able to score another 93 as a replacmenet with only 9k miles on the odometer when I bought it. Out of curiousity how much was this person selling the bike for? My best estimate is that it would bring between $2000 and $2500 in good condition.

    I just bought a 93 with 110,000 kms - about 65,000 miles. I have no concerns.

Wow, close to 200K miles. There's a UK courier who got 800K miles out of his '90 VFR, with an engine rebuild at 400K, so you should be good for another few years.

Missed your intro post so welcome to the forum. Also check out vfrdiscussion.com, there's a few more of you southern hemisphere folks on there.

edit: Here it is, interesting read on the 3rd gen VFR mileage:
