In troubleshooting the ignition system on my bike, I believe that I have a bad pulse generator. I got word this morning that Honda has discontinued this part. Does anyone have an extra working one or know of someone who might have one. Can't get my bike running without this part and I'm getting very frustrated!

    Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know if the pulse generator from the VF500C (Magna) would work?

The Honda part number for the '85 VF500F and '85 VF500C pulse generator is the same 30300-KE7-405.

I found one at my local salvage yard. They say it's in good condition. Cost is $50. I think at this point in time, I'm going to get it.

I Know my local mechanic (who is realy good) said that he could build one, but it would take time and research of other Honda parts. I never had him do it as i'm selling the bike. Not sure what it would cost though?

I went and bought the pulse generator from the salvage yard. Hopefully this will fix all of my problems. Will be a few days before I can get to it.

Installed the pulse generator tonight. Still not running, but not sure if this is even the issue at the moment. When I was draining the oil over the weekend, I took the fuel line off the carb to see if gas was even flowing and nothing. I could have a blockage in the petcock. I need to address that. Also, I need to get new plugs. The current ones look pretty bad. I will then check to see if I have spark on the front cylinders. What are the odds that I would have two bad pulse generators at the same time?

A quick update. Finally some good news. Decided to check to see if I had spark on all four cylinders after changing the pulse generator. checked the back two and they were fine. Checked the front and nothing. Decided to swap the spark unit connectors and guess what, I had spark up front and nothing in the back. Since I happened to have a couple of extra spark units laying around, I put one in and then I had spark on all four! Ya, it's about time! Bike still won't start. None of the plugs look very good, so I'm getting new ones tomorrow. Carbs could also gummed up, which I suspect they are. If I get it running, I'll let everyone know.

Just got screwed in the last week by the same thing. The joy of getting it running did not overcome the anger of hunting for it.

got another update. Bought new plugs today and got them installed (that was a challenge!). after a few tries, the motor finally kicked over and was running on all 4 cylinders, roughly, but running. A lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust, but seemed to go down some as time went on (hopefully from lack of use and not bad rings). I suspect the plugs are turning a nice shade of black. My other bike did the same thing until it setted down and now they look good. Was able to use the throttle to rev the engine. Would only go up to about 5k and the idle was all over the place. Not unexpected. I was figuring that I'd have gummed up carbs, so that will be one of the next things to do.

Another update. Took the carbs out the other night (that was a challenge) and tore into them today. They were VERY clogged. Got everything all nice and clean. Put them back in and after a few minutes of pressing the start button to get gas moving, it finally kicked over and ON ALL 4! Bike now revs very high. Didn't rev it about 10K. Took it for a test ride in my cul-de-sac. Was awesome to ride. Got back to my house and discovered an oil leak from the rear cylinder head. That will have to be fixed ASAP.

    Also discovered some other issues.
    1) When I was reconnecting the choke cable, I noticed that there wasn't anything to clamp it to. The assembly that holds it is missing, so I have to hunt it down.
    2) Speedometer isn't working. Figure the cable is bad. Easy fix.
    3) Rear brakes don't seem to be working. One problem is the brake pedal is bent and the other is I'm not sure if the pads are even closing. Will have to do further investigation.
    4) Had a hard time shifting. The shift lever bent as well and my toe kept hitting the kickstand. Will have to bend it back into the proper shape and adjust the linkage as needed.
