    Hello amigos,

Recently I bought a 2002 VFR (6th generation) it has 35000 mi, (55 000 km) and I need to know about the distribution chain, how many miles it has to be to do any repair or to replace, the bike runs perfectly and there is NO abnormal noise, the bike uses 10w40 valvoline mineral oil (motorcycle specification) , has anybody replace this chain ? or it is still safe for the normal use , I just use the bike every weekend (about 200km) in twisty roads.

    Thanks and saludos desde MEXICO¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

I have heard of problems with the tensioner but not the chain..
around 36,000 miles.. look up manual cam chain adjuster, you will see some posts on it.

Drive chain or cam chain ??

Normally, a drive chain needs replacement after about 25,000 miles along with sprockets.

There is no maintenance interval or maintenance required for the cam chain or the cam chain tensioners. They are either in working order or broke. They are internally lubed and internally adjust for tension automatically. If there is a problem you will know it. Ride till they die.

That being said, many seem to have had premature failure cam chain tensioners. There isn't anything you can do about it and from what I know it is a problem that has plagued Honda for generations. My dad has spoken of problems with them clear back in the 70's and I've heard others complain about them as well over the years. Kinda goes hand in the with the R/R. They are the two things that Honda consistently has problems with.

Ride safe, ride fun, ride worry free.
