    Hi,
I found a guy that's selling a complete kit that will turn my hydraulic clutch system into a
    cable operated clutch system.

He wants $58 bucks for it? Is it worth it??

Do or should I say, did they make kits like this for my bike (1984 VF500F)????

    Thanks for the help

I was wondering about this too - is making the switch from a hydraulic to a mechanical clutch an upgrade or downgrade?

    Mechanical clutch = manually adjusted

    Hydraulic clutch = automatically adjusted

Hydraulic converted to cable = Downgrade

I've used both and I have just as much feel with the hydraulic as with the mechanical. The only benefit I could see would be not having to deal with a potential failure of the hydraulic system. Mechanicals would be easier to fix.

It's a downgrade since the hydraulic is essentially automatic adjustment, cable is not.
Pick up the slave cylinder from any VFR750 or VFR800 or CBR1000 from ebay for next to nothing and be happy.

I can see the benefit of 'set it and forget it' when using a hydraulic clutch - but on the other side of the fence I've read posts highlighting that a mechanical clutch offers the benefit of being easier to repair, there is less risk of leaking fluid and there is an improved feel when doing high RPM launches.

Well, of course I want it for the scariness of a leaking clutch slave during a ride.

But does those models you've listed work on my VF500F?? The VFR750 or VFR800 or CBR1000??

And I've been riding with mechanical clutch slaves sine I've started at a young age...there's a difference between the 2.

I just don't want the failure to come while driving.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I'm 5x5 with what you are saying. I was more writing about why some riders might prefer a mechanical clutch and therefore would want to make the switch. Perhaps it doesn't make that much sense on a mid-50's HP 25+ year old VF500F ;-)

if there was a smiple bolt on cable swap out there that would take the place of all the hydraulic junk im down think of the weight savings and the ease of adjusting on the fly so to say

I agree, it seems like an interesting mod for the VF500F, but there are a few naysayers out there too.

The clutch slave for the VF500 is the exact same item as the one on all the VFR750s and the VFR800s. The unit on the newer CBR1000RR is a newer but functionally identical device, it just has a smooth face instead of the recessed one.

Is the hydraulic slave cylinder REALLY all that un-reliable? I think I'll be keeping it until someone can provide a good reason!

So the CBR1000R is not a direct swap...thank you for clearing that up.

As for the clutch slave activated by a cable, I'd rather rely on that....but everyone is different.

I like the feeling of the cable. Its the feeling from using it for years, and realizing how scary a hydraulic slave fails.

My 95' Firebird went on me.....at least with a cable, it'll start to stretch first, telling you to replace it as soon as possible.

And what I mean by that, is that it'll start requiring more frequent adjustments than ever.
