Hey everyone I came across a 1984 vf500f interceptor on Craigslist and paid 850 for it trying to make it my daily driver as currently I am riding an old bicycle to and from work wich is about 12 miles either direction. My dad passed away from colon cancer so I am in Austin from Houston originally to become an an oncologist to help people but have fallen on hard times. I have alot of hope and faith in this bike but unfortunately not the financial aspect to fulfill things so yall will see me posting alot on the forums. Thanks everyone. Chris

    Greetings !!
    (He means me !!)

Beware of sinking money into a project that can drain more cash than THAT bike is worth. Woulda been better to ask around here b4 purchase.

The Vf 500 is not the bike for new riders who may be depending on it for transportation or anyone without considerable mechanical skills and quality tools. If you have a VF 500, you'll need another bike to ride, as most 500 owners do.

Read up on VF 500s here: more are money pits than dependable, ridable machines. They have built-in mechanical problems.

Many of the guys who have good-running 500s are engineers or professional mechanics.

Call dehning, he's your man and can probably do a good assesment of your project. Have some cold brew to offer him.

Good Luck, maybe you got a good one...... maybe.

Chris, for a start, the clutch slave cylinder for your bike is the same as all the VFR750 & VFR800s use, and most of the CBRs for that matter. My '99 VFR800 is actually using a 2006 CBR1000RR slave cylinder that cost <$20 off ebay plus a custom stainless steel line that cost $20 if I recall. Assuming the bar size is the same, I'd imagine that you could use almost any of those same bike's master cylinders on your bike too (the newer the better obviously).

I will say that I'm inclined to agree that the VF500 may not be the best solution for a dependable daily rider, it was the bike that convinced me that I'll only ever buy project bikes with engines that actually turn over from then forward.
You have probably no cash reserves, but if you did, then take a look at something like this rather, it's a much better bet as a fixer upper.

Thank you everyone, the engine turns over and ive done the petcock mod as well as eliminated the fuel pump and cleaned and added dielectric grease to all the plugs and connectors. I also changed all the fluids and am putting in a clutch master and slave cylinder rebuild kit for it and have a rebuilt carb setup coming as im tired of messing with the carbs. There is fuel and compression and the valves are not mushroomed and cams look good, also added fuel to the intake ports and bike halfway started so thats a good sign, just have an intermittant starting short and getting iot running and I think things will be well. Im hoping for the best, about to change the carb boots and drive chain and sprockets just for good practice and got a new battery on the way also. Also you cant tell but the seat has afew tears so im buying a kit to recover it and im gonna do it myself. I grewup building muscle cars out of junkyards so I figured this wouldnt be too bad but the four carb setup and the tightness of the work area is interesting. Its currently in my living room and my room mates are being cool about it. I do need to find afew valve cover bolts and master cylinder screws. Thanks everyone. Chris\

Btw, wanted to checkout the v4hondabbs not that I dont love this forum just another way to find parts and info but havent been able to get the admin to allow me access either on my hotmail account or from a cable company email which is paid for monthly. If anyone could help or knows the admin that would be great. Chris
