Can you hear them well with them being under the lining? I have mine on top of the lining, and they irritate my ears a bit after a few hundred miles. Think I'll try mine under the lining, too. Thanks!

The audio is excellent but the speakers have a direct shot because on the RF1000, the area by the ears is plastic, with no lining. When I cut the holes, I made the ones in the plastic a bit smaller that the one needed in the polystyrene to ensure the speakers stay put and rounded the cuts so there'd be no sharp points to cause grief. I am thinking abut some lining to ensure my crud stays out of the speakers but can't see it affecting the sound quality...

Please stay relatively close to topic as there may be people actually interested in different blue tooth options and not one person's personal crusade to derail this discussion to promote his or her own agenda and/or personal beliefs.

This thread is not in the anything goes area, so anything does not go.

    Stay on topic.

    Bluetooth, MP3, etc.

Why modify a helmet, when you can buy it all ready-to-go?

Element Street Bike Full-Face Helmets Men's Riding Gear - Motorcycle Superstore

There are a few helmets out on the market that have bluetooth built-in, but thisis the only one that is stereo. Others are only left ear speaker, so listening to music's a moot point with them, even though they'll work with mp3's and the like.

I have the Element Fastrack in matte black and it's a great helmet. Thinking about getting one for my brother soon so the rides to Daytona can be more fun.

I haven't heard the Chatterbox systems mentioned yet. The new XBi and XBi2 series have some great reviews and they are both AD2P (Stereo Bluetooth) which is the latest and greatest.

Not that my helmet is the best lid but I was always leary about helmets like that. Mine cost about what that one does without the BT...so it made me wonder if the helmet itself was any good. I'm glad to hear that it's a decent bucket!!

I've been wearing Shoei helmets for a many a moon and trust them. Also, the 2 piece design of the polystyrene makes installing kits like the J&M relatively easy and comfortable, without compromising functional safety...

I'm sorry, I forgot another segment of riders - modular helmets. While you can get the Nolan with built-in bluetooth, I personally preferred the fit of the Vemar Jiano. I had a Nolan and it was a bit too round on me. I tried on a Jiano at the BMW shop in my area and it was very comfortable. Either model has the flip down internal sun visor, which is a nice feature for those riding in sunny conditions that wear prescription glasses.

The modulars are the only full face I will wear. I love them. The one that fit me best was the HJC Symax II -- has the built in flip down sun visor... and plenty of room inside the ear areas to put speakers.

If it weren't for modular helmets, I would definitely not be wearing a full face.

How is the J&M working for you?

I tried this helmet with the intent of buying it. I walked around the store for a while wearing it, but the speakers being in the strap aggravated me, and after a while they kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I have been wearing shoei for a while, and they fit my noggin really well. Shoei just released a new style called the RF 1100 and it even is set up to allow speaker insertion so you choose whichever speakers you like. Granted, the shoei costs a bit more, AND you still have to pay for whatever headset you choose, BUT that allows you to go as cheap or as expensive as you want on the headset. And in my case, it just feels soooo good...

Very well. The speakers are seated in holes cut into the polystyrene and the plastic sheets the cheek pads snap onto. The sheet holes are smaller than the speakers so they stay put, clear of my ears and the sound is excellent. The mic's foam slightly brushes my face but the noise canceling tech is good enough for clear calls without the other side knowing I'm even on the VFR. Here's some pics of the practice piece from a retired RF...

Yep, the RF1100 is an excellent helmet and I would have one, problem is I learned of them a week after buying a new RF1000...:censored:

Boy do I feel stupid...mind you I just got the helmet a week before riding season ended for me.

I just realized that the RKT-101 has little pockets for my speakers to go into! The speakers on the Scala Rider Q2 aren't the "hifi-est" speakers but when I put them in the pockets the dampening effect actually improved the sound somewhat.

I considered a J&M but stumbled on a steal of a deal for the Q2. I never would have paid full or near full price for a Q2.

elwray - I had the original HJC SYMAX. It was a good helmet but it whistled from that top vent. I also bought an HJC CL-MAX, but that was cheaply made, as it's lower price reflected. I bought a Caberg Justissimo GT Mirage and it was just a way better helmet and fit. Unfortunately, there are no US distributors for the Caberg brand. On Ebay you can find UK willing to ship to the US, but that significantly drives up the price. They do also offer Caberg's with bluetooth, but the system looks to have a myriad of buttons and would seem confusing to use when riding, IMO.

I have walked around the shop for a half hour or more with the Vemar Jiano on my head and I can tell you I like the fit of that helmet better than anything I have ever had as far as flip-ups go, and you CAN buy that one already with Bluetooth installed. I like the bluetooth on my Element. The controls are simplistic and easy to find when wearing gloves. The Vemar uses the same single toggle design. I would not hesitate to buy that if I were in the market for one in a flip-up model.

Right now my helmet is a Bell Star Recoil. It has the earspace for speakers and I am sure can accept any system I wanted to put on it. I just don't feel like drilling into a quality helmet. The Element Fastrack I use for trips of more than an hour.

Yo, Mike, Joe in Ottawa here...my wife and I used them last season (a God's send for me to be able to speak with her as she rides ahead of me as a new rider) We just took the foamy mic covers off and it made all the difference to fit.
But I gotta tell ya, our experience has been that above about 70 kph, the earphones just don't cut it volume-wise. I'm gonna attempt the so-called "earbud" mod that a good few claims helps immeasurably while also helping dampen out ambient wind noise (which I've always avoided by wearing earplugs).
I'm now searching around the VFRW site for the section where a member documented the change (apparently the fiddle factor is high because of the fragile nature of the wires).
If any member reading knows where I might find the thread, it would be appreciated!
    Word to the herd.

I totally have a different experience. I wore my Q2 with both an el cheapo CKX RR800 and my Joe Rocket RKT-101 and heard great above 60mph. (ya ya I know...mph...but my bike is American!)

Hmmmm, maybe it's my helmet in combo with poor earphone location but I've fiddled with them quite a bit without any real success. Anywhoo - like the idea of deadening wind noise with an in-ear devise of some type and know that teh regular scala earphones won't work too well in combination with foam earplugs, lol.

I wear all my helmets on the snug side. I wonder if that helps.
    Too snug for IEM's.
I have a nice custom pair of IEM's I use when my band performs live but they just don't feel good under the ol' lid.

So the Shark headset does do bike to bike? that would be pretty nice, especially for that price!
