This seems like such a simple and easy fix, but yet I cannot seem to fix it...
When the engine is cold, the neutral light will not glow while in neutral. Once the engine starts to warm up you can run the rpms up to around 4k and it will flicker alittle. Eventually the light will come on. After the engine is warm and you go down the road and back the light will come on when in neutral. Also sometimes when first turning on the switch the light will come on but as soon as the motor turns over it goes off.
I have checked and cleaned the contacts, at first I thought maybe the vibrations were causing to to get better contact and come on but that did not work.
I do not feel like this is that big of a deal, but it is just something nice to have fixed.
Could this be something in the transmission?

Any comments or information is appreciated, Thanks
    TJ

Yeah I am clueless on it now, its not that big of a problem as far as I know but its just handy to have the light. Possibly it doesnt come on while its cold could be due to me not revving the engine while its cold so it doesnt flicker on.

Here are a couple of possible things for you to check 86Intercepter500@NCSU.
Make sure the wiring at the electrical terminal on the power wire for your neutral safety switch isn't frayed.
Make sure the contact tips on that electrical terminal are clean and clip tightly onto the post of the neutral safety switch.
Make sure the battery cable connections (Pos. and Neg.) are clean and tight.
Make sure the Negative battery cable connection to the frame is clean and tight.
Make sure the electrical terminals on the Green wires that come from the wiring harness are absolutely clean and are bolted tightly to the frame.
Make sure the neutral safety switch is functioning correctly. Unscrew it from the engine case and make sure the pin in the switch moves freely.
Remember there are contact tips inside the neutral safety switch that need to make contact in order for the dash light to light up properly.
Have you tried replacing the light bulb in your dash? The light bulb itself could also be bad.
Basically just make sure that all your electrical connections on the bike are clean and tight.
It kinda sounds like you're not making a good electrical connection somewhere,or possibly your neutral safety switch could be bad.
Hope this helps you. Good Luck.

I believe it is the neutral safety switch, I have checked all wires and cleaned all connections and the problem still exists. The bulb seems to be in good condition but depending on the price of the switch I might try and replace it first to save money.

    Thanks!!!

That's what I thought was wrong with mine. Long story short it was the dash bulb. Filament broke enough to separate and at times it would contact the prong and stick when electricity was flowing. Don't over look the simple stuff.

The switch has a plunger, right?? Remove switch from engine, clean in solvent, lube plunger, try it again.....

You can test bulb and connections by touching wire to ground, and that should turn light on.

I'm having the same problem. Could you describe where the switch is to remove it and check it? Side of engine? Top? What needs to come off first to get to it?
