Suppose this shall be my first post:mad:

Anyway bike died, long cold walk home. retrieve trailer...:frown:
haven't gotten into it yet, just looking for some pointers

The bike 1996 VFR with 17.8K
Got the bike around 2k miles ago. What's been done since then...
    valves & compression in spec
2 oil changes (it's not showing signs of oil consumption, prays)
flush/fill the radiator + gas tank (got it with bad gas)
    new fuel filter
carbs synched & lightly cleaned (carbs slightly off)
new battery about 2 months ago

When it died the engine stalled and wouldn't start. lights and guages remained on. Jump start from car didn't work. Niether did my other battery with a full charge. It has run fine the last two months.

So what should I look for? fuel pump, rectalfrier, anything else common?
I'll check the fuses and stuff later.

    Thanks...

    Ouch

    Tdawg;

If it just stopped running. It can be one of 1 of 3 things Fuel, Spark, or Compression. Most likely its not compression related, unless the valve timing has jumped out of time.

    1. Does the engine crank over but not fireup? if so then start looking at the ignition spark/timing. Pull a spark plug out? is it wet? if so you are getting fuel.
Reattach plug wire to plug, and ground the plug to the engine or something metal.(be carefull not to touch the engine or electrical ground path) Crank the engine. Any spark?

    2. If it does not crank over, then you may have a bad starter motor/solenoid, ignition switch, loose wire, coroded battery terminal, etc

    3. Fuel problems could be crude in the tank/filter. Bad Fuel, or heaven forbid no fuel

    Hope this helps

    Thanks

It doesn't crank over, no sound. Lights go dim but no cranking sound.
Same deal with 2 batteries. I'll check the wires tonight.

all was fine during my 25 mile commute., just didn't make the last 4 miles.

The lights go dim when you try to crank, but it doesn't crank.

    1. Does it make any noise like a clicking or groaning?

Try lightly tapping the starter motor with the hammer handle, it sounds like you have a bad spot on the starter motor brushes. You could also have a starter thats badly worn or short circuit and drawing excessive current (causes the lights to dim). Can you put a voltmeter on the battery?

Voltage should be about 12.5-13V without load
Cranking the engine should cause to drop down to maybe 10V
