hi''ive just changed the engine on my 98 vfr 800 an it wont start, the engine i put in was from a 2000 year and i used the original throttle bodies i did'nt change the cam pulse an ingnition senors in the gearbox
ive had the engine running for a couple of seconds by putting petrol in the throttle so its not the spark side its fuel i think
the bike was running ok with the old engine apart from the head gasket an smoke

Not enough information... Do you hear the fuel pump come on? Does the engine turn over? do you have all wireing hooked up(including bank sensor and kickstand switch)? Are you useing the 98 or the 00 ecm? Have you visualy checked for spark? Etc...

sorry about that yes the pump kicks in there is a spark an the engine does turn over an as far as i can see all the connections are in hooked up, although the one from that connects the neutral cam an water temp is very tight that was on the new engine so i did'nt change that

Interesting?? If I am understanding you right you have used the 2000 long block with the 1998 throttlebody and ecm(this should not cause any problems as far as I know). There is a neutral safty switch that does not allow you to start the bike with it in gear unless the clutch is engaged but it simply does not allow the starter to turn over. The kickstand switch cuts ignition if you put the bike in gear with it down, the bank angle sensor cuts fuel if it is tripped. Are you getting any codes on the display?

This is a longshot but I always like to check the most obvios first. Have you checked all of your fuses? Did you do any other mods while the motor was out of the frame(I had a similar problem with my bike due to a bad ground because the powdercoating blocked the conection between the frame and the motor when I did my swap)? Could you post some detaild pics from all angles of the engine bay so we might be able to see if something is missing at a glance?

I doubt the ecm has gone bad, I would recomend checking to make sure the conection to the fuel pump is clean and checking teh voltage at the plug leading to the fuel pump as you turn the ignition on/off to make sure that power is getting to the pump. It is more than likely the original pump in the bike and it may have just worn out. if the pump cant build adiquite pressure fuel cant get to the injectors. When the fuel pump went bad on my bike I could hear it prime but it gave me the same symptoms you seem to be having now, I replaced it with a used one off of ebay for $25 and was good to go.

Have you cracked a fitting on the fuel line to check for fuel pressure to throttle bodies?

Another question is how long has the bike been sitting waiting for a new motor, The injectors may be cloged from fuel residue if it has been sitting for a long period of time with fuel in the rail.

the engine stop relay is under the seat, you will see a rubber flap infront of the battery, if you lift it you will see it clipped to the undertray on the right hand side of the bike by the PCV valve, check the connectors, they have a habbit or corroding giving problems with fuel pump priming
