As far as I can tell the 3rd and forth do not mix. now if its a complete system they might, but I know the slip-ons are way different.

    3rd and 4th gen exhaust

Yes, they are interchangeable. Most people get the 4th gen for their 3rd gen and get rid of the collector (heavy) and get availability of all the 4th gen slip-ons.

Most wanted full systems, TBR left side, Motad and Predator SS replacement systems from UK, and finally stock.

And on the slip-on question for 3rd gens, easiest in the world to make your own. Take your stock slip-on, cut off the neck and collar, weld onto ANY connector pipe and use whatever. I've done it 3 times, easy.

what about clearance for the 3rd gen centerstand? Can you still keep the centerstand on the 3rd gen if you replace the exhaust with one from a 4th gen?

I installed a 4th gen collector piece on my 3rd gen 92 I was able to leave the header pieces mounted to the motor which was a real benefit. The TBR cannister for the 4th gen then mounted right up. i did not have a center stand to be concerned with. I use a pit bull stand. The only rub may be that the 4x8 inch covers on the bottom of the fairing could not be installed since they mount to the 3rd gen collector.

    Thanks for that information SierraVFR.

I'm learning a huge amount on this forum, feel lucky to have such a great resource.

Soooo... the 4th gen collector & exhaust can bolt directly to the 3rd gen headers & frame, even if there are some problems fitting the bodywaork. Not sure what you mean by "4x8 covers on the bottom of the fairing" - my '93 doesn't have those. OTOH I bought a near-basket-case project bike so they may just be missing...

Did you find any difference after installing the 4th gen collector and canister? I'm guessing there wasn't a whole lot of change in power - but what about heat output, sound level, powerband, driveability, carburetor/jetting operation? I haven't dug into the carburetors on my bike, but it does seem to be running a little lean at top end.

*EDIT* - The airbox snorkel is missing from my bike, and someone drilled a bazillion holes in the airbox cover then tried to seal them over with duct tape afterward ! Found another cover in a boneyard not too far from me; but that place wanted as much for their used snorkel as the NOS Honda piece. The snorkel also seems to be one of those items that ends up costing as much on eBay as new because of shipping charges. Guess Il'' be ordering the new piece from Honda this week.

Not to change topics - does anyone know whether the passenger peg sets interchange on the 3rd & 4th gens? IF the 4th gen can bolts right onto the 3rd gen frame, then it seems like at least the RH side passenger pegs would swap.

Heat: No difference. Sound: glorious with a TBR muffler. Several threads discuss this. Performance: They say about 5 more HP. I notice the front wheel will come up it I really try in 1st and 2nd. It is quicker! I did not rejet the carbs. I have ridden it 8K miles with the TBR cannister and I just changed the plugs. They look just right. Maybe even a little rich. OK with me... I have an extra set of rear pegs. Rt side good, Lft side a little bent. If not for the muffler mount and the seat lock I would rather get rid of them on mine. My ride was laid down before I purchased it. I bought alot of stuff on ebay myself for the restoration.

OK, my centerstand arrived from David Silver yesterday. Tried to put it on, and discovered that I don't have the stock exhaust. The centerstand doesn't fit. As I said, this was a near basket-case project bike and is my first VFR. I looked at some photos online, the exhaust I have sure looks like an aftermarket exhaust - this is contrary to what the seller told me. WTH, caveat emptor.

SOOOO now my choices are to re-sell the centerstand or else ditch the aftermarket exhaust I have in favor of a stock-replacement exhaust like Delkevic.

    Opinions, suggestions?

I like my pit bull in lieu of a center stand. Maybe my centerstand had been removed before I got mine... The 4th gen collector is so much lighter it is worth not going back. In addition, TBR and others no longer make a can for the 3rd gen

Note: Center stand on a 3rd gen DOES NOT bolt up directly to the frame. It bolts to a steel U plate below the engine. Make sure and check parts fiche for all the parts.

THnaks Larry. I';ve got the U-plate & other pieces. Looks like the exhaust I have is too wide, there's no way to fit the U-plate . Might be able to make spacer plates for this, I'll have ot check that out.
