I have been seriosly considering upgrading the suspension on my 5th gen vfr. I have read many threads on front end conversions(mainly rc51 swaps). The problem is I dont want to delink the brakes but would like to have more adjustment settings and stiffer forks. From what I understand the 6th gen triples ate a direct swap on the 5th alowing for 43mm tubes instead of the 5th gens 41mm tubes. Cbr F4i tubes are the same lenth and 43mm diamiter as the 6th gen vfr and offer the adjustments I would like. Is it possible to user the lower fork sections off of a 6th gen VFR with the F4i tubes and internals allowing me to keep my stock LBS on my 5th gen?
The short answer is no. I went thru all of this last winter when I upgraded the front end of my 5G. I had or borrowed various fork tubes and fork legs to compare and match up. The VFR's use a different oil lock piece and different damper than the F4i. Also, the F4i forks are 15mm shorter than the F4 (99-00) and 20mm shorter than the VFR forks. I ended up swapping an F4i front end using VTEC triples, and F4i calipers, and Hyperpro springs for the VTEC. I also removed the LBS entirely and I have no regrets - I have stronger brakes! The rear brake is now a single line with a short jumper on the caliper to use all three on the rear brake, with an F4i Master cylinder.
