not to thread jack, but I use K&N filters ($7 on sale at Amazon from time/time). They have a 17mm lug on them that allows you to use a regular socket. The lug has a hole drilled for those of you that safety wire. Comes pre-lubed. All good

I was luck enough to snag an oil change wrench that is about 1/8" thick unbendable wire that is quite small, almost like pliers with a ring for the filter. Worked great on my CBR, not quite so well on the Viffer. Still, it is an ease getting it in & out.

After the first oil change myself (1.5 hrs) I decided to take it to a local shop instead.

+1, same here, too bad they charge triple for that little damn nut. Not to sound like a know it all but oil is the WRONG way to go for lubing the oil filter gasket IMO. Oil seems to act more like glue than a lubricant once it is heat cycled enough times, however, an nice thin coat of wheel bearing grease is a wonderful thing. Just my 2 cents.

I have one similar to this except it has it's own handle. I think it was the first tool my dad ever handed down to me as a teenager.

As a full time line tech for 25 years...meaning my oil changes have been in the thousands...I have to disagree with you 'hand tighten' guys. It's not at all unusual to see oil leaks at filters and in almost every case it's because they weren't adequately tightened. Much worse, I've seen filters loosen enough to spit oil on rear tires. Matter of fact I can think of two accidents and one oil starved engine over the years caused by this very thing.

If oil filters are torqued to factory specs and you have a decent removal tool they come off just fine.

On occasions when I've had filters that were 'problem children'...if a large channel locks doesn't do it or won't fit, I use the technique described by winaje...except I use a cold chisel and a dead blow hammer. It also helps to alternate blows 180 degrees apart on the filter. I can't remember spending more than 5 minutes to remove even the most stuck filter...at least since I was just a novice. Pounding a screwdrive through the filter to use as a handle is messy and it doesn't work worth a darn.

I had a filter once that was so stuck that I had to get a buddy who is a fireman to borrow the Jaws of Life from his fire station. Has anyone tried a cutting torch or one of those small Makita saws?

These pliers (link) or surgical gloves (for grip) have never failed to do the job for me when all else fails. Impaling the filter with a screw driver is not a good option in my opinion.
