Looking forward to picking up my 05 VFR this week...planning some long tours. Question is: are Sargent Seats that superior to the stock seat in terms of comfort for long distance riding? I went to their site and they mentioned that it is firmer than the stock seat and stated that the sift seat is too soft for long distance travel. But soft is good? No?

    Yeah new to VFRWORLD.

Yes, the Sargent World Sport seat is FAR, FAR superior to stock. The stock plank that came on my 2000 VFR sucked in a big way. It is almost comical that Honda would put such a seat on a bike that is intended for all day practicallity & comfort. Just placing the two side by side will sway even the most skeptical person. The Sargent just looks better, and it is.

A friend had a 1999 VFR with a Corbin and he let me use that for a week. I wish I could grow two more arms so I could give Corbin 4 thumbs down. It was terrible, worse than the stock seat. My wife's 89 Hawk GT came with a Corbin and after less than a month, she refused to ride on it. We put the stock seat back on and it will be sent out here in the next week or two for a Sargent makeover.

I currently have and love a Sargent seat on my bike and I've put long hours in the saddle with no complaints from me or my ass.

    KC-10 FE out...

Just sent the Hawk GT's seat to Sargent. They say it's a 3-4 week turn-around. The wife's not happy... Now she has to ride on the Corbin for a month...

I have the sargent myself. I had a corbin on my harley but not on my vfr. I have ridden 3 hours before I noticed any butt soreness on the sargent. I think that's the best I've had with any seat ever. Of course, I've never ridden a couch er Goldwing.

    sargent seats

Sargent built a custom seat for me for a R65LS BMW that worked really well. I'll probably have them build a seat for my VTR 250 soon (Corbin doesn't offer).

If you're only using a Corbin for a couple of weeks, you probably won't like the results. Corbins have to "break -in" to your shape and tend to be best for long riders.

I've found that excessively fat folks and people who ride bar-to-bar prefer other seats, but as to me, if Corbin offers a seat, that's the one that I'll buy.

He's right. Corbin seats can take a year or more to break in depending on how much you ride. They are normally harder then most stock seats, but I've found them to be very well shaped and comfortable for the long haul. The BMW I just sold had one and I'm consittering one for the VFR.

I have had 5 Sargents and 1 Corbin, no comparison.
    1) The Sargents are much more comfortable.
    2) Customer service, is far far superior from Sargent
    3) the Sargent seat pans always seem to fit, unlike the Corbins
    4) The fit and finish on the Sargents is better.

Really, can't think of one good reason to go Corbin. Usually in life there are pros and cons -- not in this case.

Guess it shows personal preference wins and one brand of seat does not work for everyone! I had a Sargent on my 919 when I bought it. Didn't like it and bought a Corbin. After about a 2000 mile break in, the Corbin fit my butt much better then the Sargent. I now have a Corbin for the '06 VFR and am loving it - so much better then the stock seat.

And unlike Spike, I have not had any quality or fitment issues with the Corbins on either bike. To each his (or her) own.

Another thought - I wonder if size/weight has anything to do with seat preference? I'm 6'2" 230 lbs.

Comfort is definately a personal preference thing. And while to a certain extent, so is the idea of customer service, on various cycle bulletin boards all over the web, I have read numerous other complaints on Corbin -- except those that go to the shop/fatory to pick theirs up. Besides my own piss poor experience, and those close around me. While I am sure Sargent has a complaint or two out there too, I have never had a problem in 5 seats, and never personally heard/read of a problem with Sargent.

If you google Corbin, I think you will pull up a lot of complaints posted all over the web.

I installed a Sargent World Sport seat on my 01 VFR800 about six months ago and other than the very sporty appearance(mine has red piping to match the bike),I immediately noticed I no longer slid forward as with the stocker, and my butt and legs stopped going numb every 50-75 miles. The only negative I found is the pillion can't be installed under the seatcowl as I like the look of my bike much better with the cowl installed.I tried the Corbin which to me felt only slightly better than stock.Oh,and to the gentleman whom commented that those whom preferred other seats to Corbin were "fatter",I am anything but that.

On the 2002+ you have the pillion section under the seatcowl, as it is one piece instead of two.

But like a lot of things in life, on the 98-2001 models where you can't, there is a pro and a con. The con is that you don't have the seat there ready in case you need it; the pro, is that you have more storage room under there. Since I rarely if ever have a passenger, I liked having the extra room on my '98.

Now on the '02 I recently bought, it came with a Corbin, since I bought it used. Just put a Sargent on it, since I don't like Corbins and I have to say, at least to me, the Sargent is much more comfy. Much softer foam, which distributes your weight, whatever it is, over a larger skin area. The Corbin is also much more flat (seat area actualy looks perfectly flat to me) and wider at the front by the tank, which for those of us with shorter legs, makes it harder to reach the ground. The negative, which I didn't notice on my seat on the '98, so the design is different, is that the seat is slightly angled forward.

    nice one!

i am what most would call a 'larger gentleman' or to my mate's 'fat boy' ( i am 6.0' and 17 stones), i had a corbin seat on my bandit and after about 2-2500 miles i would describe it as the best seat ever, loved it and no problrms at all.

never tried a sargent, am thinking of another seat for my 2005 model vfr will have to look into this.

Has anybody with a 5th gen. ever had any trouble locking the rear seat down? Just put mine on yesterday and it wouldn't lock. Was in a hurry and only had about 5 minutes to put this on.

I had a problem locking the pillion down when I first got my Sargent. It was caused by a build-up of plastic from the seat pan on the metal U-bracket that is locked. By removing the plastic this was rectified. Hope that helps!

I was having trouble with mine ('05 so not sure if the same design or not) but just put some WD-40 on it and it grooved right back in there the next try.

I just emailed them to see if they offer one for my 94. Now that the cover for the stock one is starting to crack I may as well replace it with one everybody is raving about.

My bike came with the Corbin on it, so I don't have anything to compare to, as I don't know anyone with a VFR. I think the Corbin is great, but I am recently finding a pretty big problem. Minor detail, it is so wide that I have to scooch forwardto flatfoot the bike. Major detail, I think the seat is so wide that it is causing my lower back to kill me. I don't notice it so much on the bike, but I just got done riding the bike for a couple of long days a week ago when it was warm and my lower back is still messed up. This isn't the first time this has happened, and I think I have traced it back to the bike. I am way too young to have this as a problem, so that is my complaint with Corbin.
Does anyone think a Sargeant will help? I really don't want to drop the bones for a Sargeant when I already have what I consider a pretty decent seat, but if the back thing keeps coming up because of it than it would probably be worth it.

    Thanks,
    Ian

I think the width on the sargent is pretty close. I did a side by side pic of the stock and sargent a while back. You can kind of see in the pic that it's wider.

Anyway, I have looked at a corbin on a VFR at the dealer and it looks pretty close to the same size as the sargent. I know my back used to bother me when I first got on the VFR, but after a while I guess I got reconditioned or something because it doesn't seem to bother me now. I do workout 3x a week, too. I think that helps some. I rode my bicycle the other day which is a lot more extreme position and my back ached after that! That's like a torture rack.
